Meet Dyan McNeely of McNeely Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dyan McNeely.

Hi Dyan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 2007, I briefly worked as a seasonal photographer for Picture People. During that time, I learned I enjoyed taking portraits and preserving memories of a lifetime for families. At the end of that year, I became temporarily paralyzed. During that time frame, I wondered if I would ever walk again and fought my way through physical therapy to regain mobility.

In 2008, my father committed suicide. His death caused me to gain extreme anxiety and panics and I started back into photography as a way to keep memories of everything I did with my family.

In 2017, I started back at Picture People and quickly became the studio manager. During that time, I started McNeely Photography in Dallas-Fort Worth. As of today, I co-own Tru Picture Perfection based in Dallas and McNeely Photography based in Dallas and Kansas City.

I also co-own Evermore Officiants as I am recently an ordained minister which is based in both Kanas City and Dallas.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe the biggest obstacle I have had to overcome is my panic attacks that were brought on around the time of my father’s passing. For a few years, I was afraid to drive or leave my own home. Thanks to photography, I have been able to express my feelings in my portraits. In 2018, I shot a suicide awareness project to help overcome the loss of my father.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
McNeely Photography prides itself on providing elegant, classic, and memorable portraits that last a lifetime. Our candid style captures our subjects in their special and unposed environment. McNeely Photography believes that candid photography allows our subjects to be more relaxed and enjoy their portrait sessions.

Currently, McNeely Photography is offering all high school or college seniors a free 45-minute portrait session with ten digital images at English Landing Park.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Life is all about risks. When starting McNeely Photography, I was worried about operating costs and being able to provide my clients with the types of portraits they deserve.

I learned that with everything you do, you must take a risk. I have taken classes, bought numerous pieces of equipment, and made mistakes in learning how to become a better photographer and business owner.
