Meet Delmar Beasley of Prep Hoops Academy

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Delmar Beasley.

Delmar Beasley

Hi Delmar, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Prep Hoops Academy was born from a vision I believe came from a God. Initially, we were part of another organization, but our divergent visions led us to embark on our path. While basketball unites us, my primary focus has always been preparing our players for life beyond the game. This vision was clear to me, and after praying on it, I knew it was something I had to pursue.

As we enter our second year, reflecting on nearly a decade of experience around the sport and in the game and involvement with various organizations, it’s been quite the journey. Our mission has always been to provide a holistic experience for our players, from college visits to basketball games, ensuring they’re equipped for whatever comes next. It’s been an incredible journey since that day, and we’re committed to continuing to provide the best possible opportunities for young women.

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
It’s been a challenging journey, for sure. We’ve faced adversity, especially financially. When we first started, we had to raise about $6,000 in just 30 days for jerseys and initial nonprofit costs. It seemed daunting, but we managed to pull through by sharing our vision and purpose, thanks to some key relationships.

We’ve also navigated through tough times with our players, from personal struggles to family issues.

Being a pillar of support is rewarding but weighs heavy at times, knowing we’re deeply involved in their lives beyond just coaching. Finding dedicated coaches who aren’t parents of players has been another challenge. Despite the difficulties, our priority remains clear: doing what’s best for the girls, even if it means making tough decisions along the way.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Prep Hoops Academy?
Prep Hoops Academy goes beyond typical basketball organizations. We aim to make a lasting impact on young women’s lives by introducing them to prayer, positive affirmations, college visits, and college game environments. Our core events, like the Mother-Daughter Tea Party and the annual Christmas party, provide opportunities for personal growth and bonding. We strive to create a nurturing environment that fosters love, resilience, and growth.

While we may not always be perfect, we’re committed to offering the best experience at an affordable cost. Our mission is to ensure that all young women, especially those from underserved communities, have access to basketball without financial barriers. As we look ahead to the next two to five years, we’re excited about expanding our reach and making an even greater impact. We’re just getting started on this journey.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Witnessing the girls bonding at our annual Mother-Daughter Tea Party is heartwarming. Seeing them embrace each other and share love is a special moment that never gets old.

It’s a day where they can set basketball aside and simply enjoy being young ladies together. Witnessing their joy and smiles fills me with happiness and reminds me why we do what we do.
