Today we’d like to introduce you to David Scott.
Hi David, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started performing stand-up comedy after I retired and my wife, who had Alzheimer’s, entered a nursing home. My son, Robert, had begun attending and performing at an open mic. He invited me to join him one evening, so I performed and never stopped.
The following year, I organized the first of several Alzheimer’s Fundraiser/Comedy Shows. In subsequent years, I invited other local (far more accomplished) comedians – Mike Saccone and Dave Kious – to perform. They also had a family member who had passed from the disease. We raised money and had fun doing it!
My comedy career experienced slow but steady growth.
Before comedy, I had decades of experience teaching at full-time and part-time jobs. I would tell jokes in class, but always clean jokes, so clean comedy comes naturally. I find humor in my own life (my wife, my cousins, my age) , but also in an array of other subjects (signs, Roman numerals, Facebook).
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
COVID didn’t help my stand-up career, although I did perform multiple times online using Zoom. I also took advantage of the time to compile my jokes, humorous screenplays, and comedy bits into the book, Closed For Repairs With Plumbing Problems. Recently, I released an updated version, Closed For Repairs With Plumbing Problems 2.0. I also used the time to publish my book of silly cartoons Wrong Way, and to create my website https://davidgscottcleancomedy.com/.
On the plus side, Kansas City loves comedy! There are so many businesses who host open mics and give beginning comedians opportunities to work on their material. There are also wonderful comedy venues in town: The Comedy Club of Kansas City, The Funny Bone, The Bird Comedy Theater and Clint’s Comedy Club.
In addition, Kansas City is a hotbed of comedic talent. Some have left town to follow their comedy dreams in New York and Denver. Others (most notably Michael Joiner, Andrea Caspari, Elliott Threatt and Will “Will C” Clifton) travel nationwide and internationally with Kansas City as their home base.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Early on, I was jealous of younger comedians and their edgy material, but I quickly realized that a lot of people want to hear clean comedy. My strong suits are nursing homes and retirement centers, not bars and nightclubs. At The World Series of Comedy, I learned that some comedians prefer clean comedians to start their shows, so their material seems more shocking.
I am very proud of my string of five one-man shows for the 2022 Kansas City Fringe Festival, my book of cartoons (Wrong Way), my book of jokes (Closed For Repairs With Plumbing Problems 2.0,) and my comedy CD (Let Me Give You a F’rinstance).

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
First, a list of people who have supported my in my comedy career:
Richard Montano greeted me warmly at my first open mic and immediately made me feel part of the comedy community. Later, he and Jerad Langley invited me to perform on their radio show, These Two Idiots. Thank you, Richard!
I have been very fortunate to be a member of Veterans of Comedy, a comedy troupe created by Will “WillC” Clifton. We are veterans who put on comedy shows primarily at VFW and American Legion posts all across the midwest – from Colorado to Indiana and from Wisconsin to Oklahoma. Recently, we performed at the Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic in Snowmass, Colorado – a wonderful and inspiring event. Will continues continues to be a wonderful comedy mentor. Thank you, Will!
Rod Reyes has asked me to perform with him multiple times in Kansas City. Plus, there was a memorable comedy road trip to Indiana and Illinois, during which he shared numerous tips from his vast warehouse of comedy experiences. Thank you, Rod!
Dave Kious invited me to appear multiple times on his radio show on 97.7 The Dawg, and to perform with him out of town. He has always taken the time to promote both my book and my website. Plus, we always have a great time! Thank you, Dave!
Andrea Caspari has been a great supporter, and has given me multiple opportunities to perform in her place when she had a scheduling conflict. Thank you, Andrea!
Elliott Threatt asked me to appear on his webcast The Last Show. What fun! He also promoted my book of cartoons, Wrong Way. Thank you, Elliott!
Richie King of Comedy Vets has invited me to share the stage with him multiple times, and to appear on his webcast Kings Court. Thank you, Richie!
The entire Kansas City comedy community has been very supportive over the years. I will always be grateful to those who asked me to compete at a local comedy competition or to perform at one of their local shows. So many! Thank you all!
