Meet Colleen Kelly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Colleen Kelly.

Hi Colleen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstories.
My grandfather started working at what was then “The Westport Inn” in 1947. He had such a huge personality and performed so often that people began calling the joint “Kelly’s.” When his partner passed away, the bar’s name was officially changed to “Kelly’s Westport Inn.” My brother Mitch and I are third-generation owners. I started full-time here 15 years ago.

Let’s dig deeper into the story – has it been an easy path, and if not, what challenges have you overcome?
Challenges are being a bar owner, some small and some big. Covid was a huge one. My family has seen a lot of ups and downs over 76 years. But overall, life at Kelly’s is good. Sometimes I pinch myself that I get to call this a job. If I ever get nervous about the business, my dad says, “Ride the Wave, honey.” And he’s right. The word blessed is overused today, but that’s exactly what I am. I fell into this role, and I know how lucky I am.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What people love about Kelly’s is the consistency. We always have to adjust to the times, but in general, keeping Kelly’s the same is what people want. A huge part of that is our staff. They’re like family to us, and in turn, they treat customers like family. Creating an environment where people want to come to work is a massive part of our success. We have incredible people that work for us, and they tend not to leave, which we love.

What do you think about happiness?
I love Westport, our customers, and our staff. Some people leave work feeling deflated. I leave (most days) feeling reenergized.
