Meet Clark Stinson of Brookside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Clark Stinson.

Clark Stinson

Hi Clark, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I take improv comedy classes at the KCIC theatre, and a game we play often is to take the dialogue from a scene and see if we can say it in half the time. Then we do half of that time! It’s a fun exercise in brevity and hitting the key points. With that, I love reading and photography. I started with reading. I was in a foreign country, and at the bookstore, in the English section, I had a choice between a book about Donald Trump and a book about photography. It’s an easy choice. Photography reaches any part of life, so I’ve evolved from images of churches to images of prisons to athletes, portraits, and movement.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One time, I ran out of space on my SD card (which happened to be near the end of the shoot). Another time, I ran out of battery (luckily, near the end of the shoot). I wiped an SD card before copying the images (from personal my work), which did not feel good. Most technical issues are usually a result of poor preparation and can be avoided. Other on-site issues are inevitable; part of any engagement is making quick and good decisions on-site. Otherwise, working with people is fun, and people are great.

Thanks for sharing that. Can you tell us more about your work next?
I specialize in creating art around athletes and movement. I like the word athlete because we can label many athletes, not just professionals. I’m competitive, but I don’t believe art is a zero-sum game. There is room for many styles! My work is clean, colorful, and intentional. I am very conscious of composition, symmetry, and color palettes, and trust my judgment.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Buying bags of frozen shrimp out of the Schwan’s truck.
