Meet Caleb Geronimo of Kansas City Missouri

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caleb Geronimo

Hi Caleb, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was homeschooled in Salina Kansas. I learned to play trumpet at my brief stint in a Christian school to get out of having to sit quietly in a room with a teacher. Spent years volunteering at a zoo. Learned bass to get out of being in trouble at home allowing me to get out of the house. Played bass for most of the big churches in town then eventually got asked to play blues when i was 17 and have been a gigging musician since. I spent my highschool years volunteering at the zoo and doing a plethora of musicals and plays. School wasnt a good fit for me so I continued pursuing music and working 3 jobs playing in multiple original bands Buildings Like Mountains, A.M, and Falling Walrus. After COVID I decided it was time to move to a place that catered towards music. I played full time and filled in with multiple bands throughout Kansas city. The Cowardly Lions, The Stolen Winnebagos, Lone Jett, The Harvey Brothers Band, Longshot, The Fling, DEANN, Highschool Never Ends, and Twice On Sunday. I do solo acoustic shows throughout the city and region and hit the road with whoever needs me singing and slinging low end but usually you can find me every Wednesday as a founding member of The Fling a jam hosted at odowds on the plaza 8-2am. A jam that was started at Johns Big Deck 3 years ago featuring talent from around the city and even touring artists from around the country. I also lead The Geronimo Co. A jam band focused on bringing new life to your favorite tunes with guitarist Nate Wilkinson and Drummer Lajuan Goodwin. When I’m not busy playing I am a sound designer for Vigo Entertainment creating soundscapes for videogames and entertainment.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No. Music and art is a different path. You lose a lot of friends both to changing paths and addiction. I always say we don’t start playing music because we were having a good time. Music and art is a complex and emotional experience. Making it your career will always bring heartache. It has been so hard being away from my family and my hometown but these are the sacrifices we make to pursue the thing we love. I have sacrificed comfort, relationships, birthdays, and opportunities to continue down the path of music.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am mostly known in Kansas city for my bass playing, harmonies, and vocals. I bring a new light to traditional styles. I have played with so many groups I am mailable to any situation and when given the opportunity to flow I can’t wait to get funky with it. I have traced the country with so many different players and groups it’s been such a blessing. I learn from every musician I work with and take lessons from everyone. Music is a massive learning ground for me and I feel blessed to participate in it. I take all these things and funnel them into my writing and creative works.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the community. It’s a big small town. I love the culture, food, and many many routs and opportunities hidden in the alleyways and halls of this historical and beautiful place. Coming from a smaller town it does make me sad that I think a lot of people do not appreciate the beauty and art of Kansas City. Many people have grown up here and take it for granted. There is more here than tin roof and power and light if you take the time to get to know the city and see the art that is abounding out here!
