Hi Caleb, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started Sun Solar on my wife’s birthday in 2012. I had been a Deputy Sherrif and sold insurance, but something wasn’t clicking. I started installing solar in my own home with my family’s help. Once my neighbors saw my project, they were interested if I could do it in their homes. So, with a $13,000 loan from my grandparents, I started to learn how to install solar and make my community a greener place. Through many hours of hard work, Missouri Sun Solar was born. Over the years, as our service area grew, we thought it prudent to drop the “Missouri” and become Sun Solar. We’ve grown the company from 3 employees to over 300 in the 11 years we’ve been in business, and none of it would have been possible without my amazing family’s support. Solar isn’t just a passion of mine. It was a way for me to unite a community and help local families and businesses become energy independent.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a challenging journey; anyone who grows a business as quickly as we have encountered some growing pains. We’ve had to grow our culture internally to support our 250% growth rate. We’ve always wanted to be sustainable in our business practices, so we’re still here after so many competitors have dropped out of the race. Changing political tides, interest rates, and solar legislation are things we have to work on to improve constantly. I have spent much time in Jefferson City pushing our state government to pass pro-solar legislation, with some success. However, there is always room for improvement.

Sun Solar is a family-owned Solar Company based in Springfield, Missouri. We specialize in residential, commercial, and luxury solar energy systems. We have offices in Columbia, MO, Kansas City, and St. Louis, MO. We’ve been in business for 11 years, since 2012. We are the oldest solar company in Missouri and install more residential solar than anyone in the state. We recently moved into Illinois, as well as Arkansas and Oklahoma.
What makes you happy?
Family, I have a wonderful wife and five children under 10; they keep me going and push me to be the best father. This certainly carries over into my business relationships and decisions. My farm in Houston, Missouri, also makes me very happy; the peace and tranquility of that land are unmatched.
