Meet Brett Guemmer of Guemmer Athletics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Guemmer.

Hi Brett, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story starts as a high school runner who decided to come to the University of Missouri Kansas City to run track and cross country and go to school. I ended up getting a teaching degree, taught and coached at the high school level for a couple years before returning to UMKC to coach track and cross country. While coaching, I got involved with the Kansas City Running Club. I would help with group runs, training sessions, and road races. I ended up taking over as a race director for a couple races and as the timer of a few. Now I am the race director and timer for the Ward Parkway Four on the Fourth Run and a few others.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Races are always a challenge, but seeing people reach goals is worth it. With races you have to work with a number of different people to make everything come together. The hardest part of getting this business off the ground was having a trailer full of equipment get stolen right before the busiest part of the year. Luckily I had some help from a timing company out of Manhattan, KS, Red Dirt Racing Co, reach out and offer help. I wouldn’t have made it as a business without their help.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Guemmer Athletics is a company aimed at helping runners train and race. We want to provide a positive experience for runners at events and help them reach their goals. This might be running their first race, running a fast time, or just improving themselves. We try to partner with local companies to support them at our races. The goal for Guemmer Athletics is to build community for our runners and partners.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Being a business based on running, we want to see runners be able to run today and in future days. We want to find partners who can help provide ways to keep our runners going and we want to keep our runners happy and healthy. We also want to give back to members in our community who might need help with anything running related.
