Today we’d like to introduce you to Billy Quach.
Hi Billy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
At the beginning of my sophomore year in college at the University of Arkansas, I changed my major from Engineering to Broadcast Journalism because of my newly discovered passion for videography. I had just gotten my first camera and as I started to make videos with my friends, I realized I had a talent for making something out of nothing.
I began filming everything I could but became known for the filming of quidditch teams amongst the collegiate ranks. I played quidditch at Arkansas and would bring my camera to tournaments to film for other teams. This led me on a path of trying to become a sports content creator and during my senior year, I applied to as many sports organizations and teams as possible to find a job working in sports, creating videos.
I applied to 60+ positions and probably got rejected or ghosted by about 55 of those applications. One of the positions that I was offered was an internship with the Kansas City Chiefs. I took the internship thinking it would be my best and only opportunity to prove I belonged in this field.
I didn’t know what the future held and the internship was only 8 months so I moved to Kansas City after graduating and lived in an AirBNB for 8 months. I worked as hard as I could to show that I belonged at the Chiefs and my hard work paid off when they offered me a full-time position at the end of the 2017 season. I was a full-time content creator for the Kansas City Chiefs and began making social videos for the team during Patrick Mahomes’ MVP season. This made it very easy for my content to be successful on social media and a lot of people took notice.
In the off-season of 2019, I was reached out to by Andrew Carter and Ben Walnick of Let It Fly Media, a start-up content agency only 2 years old. They offered me a full-time position as their Creative Director and to be their first official hire as a company. I accepted knowing that the potential for this company would be high even though leaving the Chiefs before they won a super bowl was the payoff.
Since I’ve joined Let It Fly Media in 2019, we’ve expanded to 21 total employees, moved into a new office in the Plaza, and have done work that I’ve never imagined doing. We shot the Super Bowl (LVI), we shot the CFP National Championship, we’ve shot multiple PGA Championships and we’ve done so much more in the short amount of time we’ve been a company.
On top of Let It Fly Media, I also joined the NFL LCC program now that I was no longer with the Chiefs and that allowed me to still shoot Kansas City Chiefs games on the side for the NFL. Through the LCC program, I have shot and covered the last 3 Super Bowls including LIV in which Kansas City won it all.
I recently just got back from Super Bowl LVI in LA and am now looking forward to what awaits in 2022.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a smooth road from the perspective of others. All they see is 3 Super Bowls at the age of 27.
What people don’t see is the number of hours I’ve put into learning my craft. The amount of nights I’ve stayed up following a tutorial or working on a video. The amount of times I’ve said no to my friends’ invites of going out, the amount of weddings I’ve missed, the amount of holidays/family time I’ve missed.
I would be lying to myself if I said the journey to now has been smooth. I make it look smooth with my online presence but behind the scenes, there are some rough days. Working in sports has its consequences and I am well aware of what I’ve sacrificed to get here.
It’s definitely been an internal struggle along the way, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. The things I’ve seen and done before hitting 30 are things I never imagined doing.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the Creative Director at Let It Fly Media as well as an NFL LCC. I shoot and edit videos.
I mainly specialize in sports videography. I am known for my sports videography. I am most proud of the team we’ve built at Let It Fly Media. I think my attention to detail and drive are what sets me apart from others.
What matters most to you?
The success of the people around me or the people around me “on social media”
Along this journey, I’ve realized how lucky/blessed/etc I’ve been to be on a path where I get to do what I love to do for a living. And a LOT of people message me every day saying they want to do what I do.
Throughout this journey, I’ve realized the influence I have on the people who follow me on social media. I’ve made it my “mission” to help as many people as possible figure out how to get to the level of creating that I’m at because I did not have that when I was coming up in this industry.
Being at the top of industry makes me realize how awesome it is to be up here and all I want is for everyone else to experience that same feeling.
