Today we’d like to introduce you to Avery Marsden.

Avery Marsden

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
I began my nail technician journey after graduating high school in 2022. I knew I wasn’t ready for college yet, so I took a gap year before starting the rest of my life. During this year, I spent some time discovering my interests, but in the end, my parents helped me determine hobbies that I was the most passionate about and had a likelihood of pursuing. By this point, I had been doing my nails for about two years. My mom suggested I go to manicurist school as it was relatively quick (only a few months) and also something I was interested in. I learned all the basics in school, like nail structure and sanitation practices, but I learned about gel extensions when I graduated. As soon as I learned about gel-x, I was hooked. It uses minimal chemicals and creates the most beautiful, natural-feeling nails. This inspired me to branch out, as most nail salons still needed to offer gel-x. I began with my closest friends, begging them to let me do their nails from the corner of my parent’s basement. I created an Instagram account featuring my friends and gained a small following. I then took other friends and acquaintances as clients as I gained popularity. My brand began to prosper as I moved into my first salon suite just five months after graduating from nail school. I was meeting lots of new people and clients that later became regulars. Over the summer, I became especially popular with all teens and young adults coming home from college. Here, I found a love for doing nail art, and these clients are typically more open to trying new things or letting me freestyle. One year later, I accomplished only what I could have dreamed of. I am fully booked weeks out, and my clients always want to do something new or special. I am so grateful for my clients who have helped shape my journey, and I get excited to wake up every day and go to my salon.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The main struggle I faced was getting new clients and followers. Being a service provider is challenging because I constantly try to please my clients. Whenever I started questioning whether this path was for me, I just had to remember why I started becoming a nail tech: I wanted to make people feel confident every day. I used nails to create a business that helped my clients feel more put together, excited, and even happy when they saw their fingers. I began my business for the right reasons, so I had to accept that gaining clients and followers would take time. I had to be patient to succeed in my industry.

As you know, we’re big fans of The Spill Nail Company. What can you tell our readers who might need to be more familiar with the brand?
The Spill Nail Company is the name of my brand. I perform manicurist services atypical of that of a regular salon. For example, my services specialize in gel extensions (gel-x), builder gel, and nail art. Gel extensions are a relatively new service where I glue a full-cover nail tip on top of a client’s nail using thick gel glue. It is typically better for the health of my client’s natural nails as acrylics and dip are more prone to damage and improper application from nail technicians at regular salons. Builder gel is another thick gel used as an overlay on natural nails, meaning it adds strength and structure to a client’s nails without providing a nail tip. Nail art, however, is my primary specialty. I love anything from a simple color to extravagant designs and charms. That, and the quality of my work, is what sets me apart from other nail salons. I take my time with each client, making sure they are satisfied with the length, shape, and look of their nails every step of the way. My pricing is equivalent, if not cheaper, to nail salons in Kansas City, providing a better deal and service to my community. I am most proud of how I can ensure every client leaves completely satisfied and excited with their nails every time they come in.
