Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Morris.
Hi Austin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When we heard Enchanté was closing to the public, we reached out to Heather, the owner, to see if we could acquire the business, she said yes and we worked out a plan to keep the bakery running in back and to reopen the front of house under our ownership.
We renamed the shop Soli Deo, adapted from the Latin Soli Deo Gloria—“Glory to God alone.” Our hope is simple: create a warm, welcoming place where you can enjoy a thoughtful cup of coffee or a fresh pastry, rest for a while, and catch up with the people you love.
From day one, we set out to make our coffee on par with our pastries. We’re proud of the balance we’ve reached—and our guests seem to agree, so that is a win!
We also love our baristas. They’re wonderful people who bring joy to every interaction with their passion for coffee and for others. We hope people come by for a drink or a bakery treat and enjoy the space like we do.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We own another company, Aventi Weddings in KC so we are used to the craziness of owning and starting a business. Everything has been relatively smooth thanks to our awesome staff and Heather, Jude, and the bake staff we wholesale our baked goods from. The loyal customers are really great as well, they have been very kind with all the changes as we got our stuff together over the past 7 months. We have had so many new customers since reopening which is so encouraging too! It has been a really great learning experience for my wife and I and although all businesses are stressful at times, it has been a great experience so far.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I think we are known for our authentic French croissants but I hope we are becoming more known for our welcoming environment and great coffee! We also launched our own product called Soli’s, they are a croissant donut, currently we have blackberry, lemon, and cinnamon sugar and new flavors coming soon.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe things happen for a reason. My wife and I hadn’t been to Enchanté in over a year. Then our church moved next door, and the very next week we stopped in, planning to make it our Sunday spot, only to learn they were closing. I’ve always been the kind of person who just asks, even if the answer might be no. I asked, and Heather said yes. From there, everything fell into place. Some might call that luck or coincidence, but at some point the odds don’t add up. To me, it points to something bigger at work.
