Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Williamson.
Hi Ashley, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, after school, I would hang out at the hair salon until my mom got off work and watched everyone working. I would go home and practice with my mom and sister. When I went to college, I was one of few that knew how to braid, so I would spend Friday nights braiding the football players’ hair before game day. My roommate would let me practice weave installations on her, and the next thing I knew was how I made money while in school to help support my daughter and me.
I moved to Kansas City in 2010, and friends from school turned into my clients, and they would tell people about me. I had a small setup in my living room. I purchased a home and created a salon area in my basement. My clientele was growing fast, and I needed more space. I started offering specials and using a booking site; I did give-a-ways and created a social media platform; I got a logo and started to put myself out there.
I always said I wanted people to let everyone know who did their hair, so I came up with Ashley Does My Hair not very creative, but it captured my vision. My specialty is sew-ins, so I wanted my logo to illustrate that. The designer made the l in my name a needle with thread going through it, which was perfect. I got serious about doing hair, so I became a licensed Braider through the Missouri board of cosmetology. I’ve been doing hair for 14 years and always wanted my own shop. I started looking, and nothing seemed to work out. In December of 2021, I was presented with an opportunity to work in a salon and have my own suite. I was so scared and uncertain. However, I knew it was time. In January of 2022, I moved into my suite, my mom helped me decorate, and my husband built me a station. I took my first client on January 2nd. This was the best move for me as a professional and has helped my business excel.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Ohhhh no! I have had people walk out on me and not pay. I’ve done hair for a little bit or nothing to have a few dollars in my pocket. I had to find my thing! The thing that sets me apart from others One thing I pride myself on is being prompt and timely. I try to perfect my craft with every client
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a licensed braider that specializes in protective styles. I work with all hair textures and pride myself on achieving each client’s desired style while maintaining and growing healthy hair. My favorite and most would say I’m known for is my weave installations (sew-ins). I ensure the hair looks like it is growing out of your scalp; undetectable installations are my thing.
Is something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I love a challenge. I want to step out of the box, and I’m not scared to try new things.
