Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Scherer.
Hi Ashley, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started in the pop-up style industry with my first Business called The Makery KC. This is a pop-up party workshop that hosted modern Do It Yourself (DIY) projects from start to finish with guided instruction, all supplies needed to create your one-of-a-kind take-home project, and of course a wine pairing and small bites. Our flagship space was inside a historic building in the West Bottoms district. What began as a fun way to gather friends led into a popular event and expanded into offering shopping and a real girls’ day out destination.
During the covid pandemic, our workshops were put on pause as were many other small businesses in the area. I decided to make the most out of this situation and took it as an opportunity to work on a dream project of mine. In my true DIY nature, I purchased an old Frito lays delivery truck and stripped it down to rebuild as a modern mobile boutique. I used my experience in woodworking and my can-do spirit to learn via YouTube videos on truck conversions and got to work! In about a year I had the boutique of my dreams and expanded my retail into women’s apparel.
Being fully mobile I was able to bring the shopping experience to homes and private small events offering a pandemic proof girls’ day out experience. Post-pandemic, I was able to do truck pop-ups at local KC wineries and various other events as well as book private shopping and private neighborhood parties. My heart for gathering women and creating a space for us to take a break from work, children, and all the other hats we wear to just relax and enjoy each other is completely filled at each event I bring the Boutique truck to.
Bringing my passion for fashion and curating collections for the modern woman has been a dream come true and getting to meet so many amazing women along the way whether shopping or other boss babe business owners has been life-giving.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
To put it briefly yes, there have been a few Lol. I feel like with every step forward I was met with three kicks back. But determination, a dream, and an amazing group of supportive friends got me to the finish line, behind schedule of course but I got there! There were several times during the build-out process of this giant 24ft truck that I wanted to throw in the towel and give up. Beginning from the white knuckle drive on the highway home after purchasing my truck.
Thank you to anyone who saw me on the road and gave me grace. Now, I absolutely love driving my boutique around! The build-out of course led to many more struggles where I felt I was in over my head. Literally holding a sheet of plywood over my head trying to build a ceiling and having it fall down on me leaving a very well-earned black eye. This was my very first struggle with feeling defeated and thinking I wasn’t going to be able to get this done on my own and a humbling moment of learning that it was ok to ask for help. Fortunately, I have some amazingly talented friends and we got the build finished!
Just in time for the old rusty breaks to go out while driving down the road, luckily, we were on some back roads and got it home safely and into the mechanic Frita the truck went for some updating and safety checks. The work put into this truck has been worth all the tears sweat and love. Sitting inside the truck boutique I am constantly feeling grateful and proud of making this vision turn into such a beautiful shopping sanctuary.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a creative entrepreneur, I feel like I really understand how to create a much-needed and gorgeous experience that leaves you feeling inspired and reenergized. I use my creative eye to see and curate an on-trend and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere to allow women to gather and enjoy their time.
Whether creating a home decor DIY project in a workshop or shopping for a new outfit. I love showing women how to piece things together to make something beautiful. Showing them how to wear certain trends and mixing closet staples with something a little modern or trending.
I feel like we can get so caught up in acquiring material things and just doing a target run filling a cart with crap we don’t need that leave us feeling over cluttered and underwhelmed. I wanted to bring the experience element back into shopping and encourage women to gather with some friends who encourage each other and enjoy picking items and new outfits that you will love.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Wow, so many that’s a hard one to narrow.
I would have to say shopping with my mother especially when we would get together with her sister and my cousins. Mostly around the holiday season, I loved being at the mall and seeing all the window displays and people rushing about.
Everything was so beautiful and connected!
