Today we’d like to introduce you to Arenita Scott.
Hi Arenita, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into the beauty industry began when I felt unfulfilled in pursuing a real estate license. One day, during a candid conversation with my mom about what I felt about this, she said she saw me thriving in beauty due to my liking to experiment with makeup and style my look. Her words ignited a spark within me. I recalled a previous time with my lash artist, who had told me about the esthetics field. Interested, I did some further research and realized it perfectly aligned with my interests. Fate guided me when I moved 5 hours from home and found that my top pick in school was less than a mile away. I promptly enrolled in 2019 and graduated in 2020. During my time in school, I learned various services, but lash extensions were my favorite. As I honed my skills, gorging myself on as much information as I could on everything lash extensions, I eagerly practiced on friends and family, on the chaise of my living room couch, which turned into lashing on a foldable massage table, and then renting out a converted room my classmate made into a spa room. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic prompted a move from my home in Colorado to Kansas City, MO, where I transferred my license and started my career at a franchise salon. However, after a year and a half, I wanted more autonomy and creative freedom, which led me to transition to working alongside an independent artist. After nearly a year of collaborating and refining my craft, I felt compelled to carve out my own space in the industry. After about a year and a half of running my own business, it’s been very fulfilling, and I am incredibly thankful everything happened the way it did.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey has been far from smooth, but every challenge has been a stepping stone to where I am today. During my time in school, I juggled a full-time job I didn’t enjoy with babysitting responsibilities. My days I started at 4 am, working until 2:30 pm, babysitting until 5 pm, and attending school until 9 pm. Exhaustion was my constant companion, but I kept reminding myself that this sacrifice was temporary, knowing that obtaining my license would be worth it. Leaving the comfort of working for the salon and the independent stylist were more daunting hurdles. The thought of stepping into the unknown without the safety net of a traditional job structure was terrifying. There were no bosses to report to, no colleagues to rely on for support, no hourly pay to fall back on, and certainly no sick pay if I ever fell ill. Every decision felt like a leap of faith, with uncertainty looming. The challenges didn’t continue. Learning the ropes of opening my own business was a steep learning curve, and the financial burden caught me off guard. The costs accumulated faster than I anticipated, from suite rent to website fees, booking platforms, insurance, advertising, and furnishing my space with top-notch supplies. It was a humbling budgeting and resource management lesson, forcing me to adapt quickly. Despite the hardships, each obstacle strengthened me and my spirit. Every setback became a lesson, molding me into the business owner and artist I am today. While the road may have been rocky, the satisfaction of overcoming adversity and building something of my own has made every struggle worthwhile.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories revolves around sitting in my grandpa’s lap, enveloped in the glow of the TV screen, as we watched his favorite shows, “Law and Order” and “House.” In those moments, I was small enough to fit snugly in his embrace, perched on his blue recliner. I can still remember the curiosity bubbling inside me as I bombarded him with questions about the words and concepts I didn’t understand in the shows. Patiently, he would pause and explain, and I hung onto his every word, eager to learn more. He swiftly muted the TV during commercial breaks, citing his disdain for ads. It was then that the real fun began. He’d tickle me relentlessly until tears of laughter streamed down my cheeks. Those moments of pure joy and connection are etched into my heart forever. As the shows ended, I’d reluctantly retreat to my bedroom, but not before asking him for a few quarters. With them, I’d eagerly anticipate the arrival of the school supplies cart, where I’d splurge on colorful eraser caps and scented markers, treasures that made my young heart sing. These cherished memories of laughter, learning, and love remind me of the precious bond I shared with my grandpa, a bond that remains deeply cherished now that he is at rest.
