Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Anthem.
Hi Anthony, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Well I moved to the Kansas City, Missouri area when I nine years old. I grew up in the Independence, Missouri area in a single parent household. So, it was myself , My sibling, and My mother. My mom worked a lot so I took the reigns of the household when she was away. There was a lot of cooking and cleaning and help with homework when I was younger. I grew up in church going to Metropolitan Spiritual Church in Kansas City, MO. I sang in the church choir and I sang in the choirs in high school . To be honest that where I learned more about my love for music was through all those years of singing at church and school. I was influenced by multiple sounds growing up, Rap music (my mom loved to listen to rob base when she was pregnant with me), R&B and Soul, Rock, and of course gospel and classical and many numerous styles. Have influenced me creatively over the years.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Music is never a smooth road as long as I have been doing this I’ve been actively making music for almost 18 years august and its always a challenge. I’ve had unfortunate collabs not work out with other artists, money issues, health issues ( one that made it hard to make music for a couple years), and even just depression. It can be such a rewarding feeling when you put together a song that is coming from the heart and sometimes it can be discouraging because some people never get to hear what was on your heart at the time. Music is a game of consistent work and crafting and evolution and Ive had to evolve multiple times and still am evolving.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a rapper and singer and to be honest I can say I have placed 10000 hours of mastering it too. I’ve had years where I wrote a verse every single night for 2 years no matter where I was at even at a bar just so I could get better. I did freestyles, I did open mics, karaoke, practice in the mirror, online cyphers the whole nine yards just to get better and even then I don’t think I am there yet but I am growing. I think what makes me a stand out is that I am not afraid of improvement and going to a different place to make a good track. I am ready to be vulnerable in a time that sees it as weak I am Anthony Anthem and no one else but myself when I show that side.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
A lot, because at the end of the day Music is luck. You can have the skills, and all the money but if you don’t have anything to get behind in the long run you can fade away quickly. I have been lucky and fortunate enough to work with incredible people from all over. Artists from, Cleveland (EPIC), Delaware(302 Nao), California(Gottabeclean), Colorado(Bouce Ball Boogie) , UK (Bobby Diazz), Poland (Na Patencie), France (Love Drums and Soul) and Italy (Onik Zero). Honestly the last couple years of doing this has been my most fortunate people that believe in me and want to work with me so I am lucky in that aspect I can definitely say that. But not gonna lie I want good luck to shine on the success of a song I made something that hits people in the heart then that would be my biggest lucky moment if that makes sense?
