Today we’d like to introduce you to Angie Ritz
Hi Angie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Johnson County, KS, where I grew up with a love for community service, meaningful friendships, and all things nerdy—school, especially math, was my happy place. From an early age, I knew I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives, which led me to pursue a degree in pre-counseling with plans to become a therapist.
During college, life threw me a curveball when my mom was diagnosed with cancer. Alongside the challenges of supporting her, I found myself navigating my own growing anxiety, especially around the idea of not being fully prepared for the unpredictability of therapy sessions. I decided to step away from my dream of becoming a therapist but stayed in the mental health field, working in supportive roles at community-based mental health organizations.
While in college, I also got married and became a mom. After graduating, I chose to stay home with our kids and became a master of managing our single-income budget—something I genuinely loved doing! When our second daughter was born, I started exploring what might come next for me and stumbled across Kansas State University’s Personal Financial Planning program, which included a track in Financial Therapy. It was like everything clicked: I loved budgeting and helping others find clarity in their finances. Maybe this was my calling!
I dove into the financial therapy courses and quickly realized this was what I wanted to do—help people heal their money stories—but as a therapist, not a financial planner. By this time, my anxiety had greatly improved, and I knew I was ready to pursue my original dream of becoming a therapist. Just as I was gaining clarity in my career, though, life threw me another massive curveball.
At the end of that first course, I found a lump and was diagnosed with breast cancer one week before my 30th birthday. In a whirlwind month, I faced decisions about fertility, surgery, and chemo while coming to terms with being a 30-year-old mom of two young children with cancer. It was one of the hardest seasons of my life, but I completed treatment just before Christmas that year.
A few months later, my marriage ended, but I leaned into the future I wanted to build for myself and my daughters. I finished my financial therapy coursework, started a two-year preventative treatment plan, and began graduate school in Marriage and Family Therapy. Juggling single parenthood, cancer treatment, and grad school was nothing short of overwhelming, but I was determined to push forward because I knew I was exactly where I was meant to be.
After graduating, I took a leap of faith with a couple of classmates, and we rented an office to open our private practices. Together, we created a warm and welcoming space for healing in our community—a space I’m incredibly proud to call my professional home.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to where I am today has been anything but smooth. Facing cancer and divorce in the same season of life was incredibly challenging, and those experiences shaped so much of who I am today, both personally and professionally. But even after making it through those hurdles, the path to becoming a business owner brought its own unique struggles.
Starting a private practice has been a mix of highs and lows. One of the things I absolutely love about it is having control over my schedule, policies, and caseload—things that are especially important to me as I navigate the balance between single parenting and providing for my family. However, the challenging side of starting a practice is the business and marketing piece. I went to school to become a therapist, not a marketing professional, but owning a small business means learning how to tell the world, “Hey, I’m here, and I can help!” I’ll admit, I was a bit more optimistic than realistic about what it would take to build a thriving business.
Next year, I’m hopeful that I’ll find a more steady rhythm when it comes to balancing home life, the demands of running a business, and the joy of providing therapy to my amazing clients. I think that rhythm will help smooth out some of the bumps I’ve felt along the way. And while 2024 has been a whirlwind—with graduating, opening my practice, and undergoing two major reconstruction surgeries—I’m proud of how far I’ve come. It hasn’t been easy, but I’m managing it all the best I can, and that feels like a win.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At Moxie Wellness, we believe mental health is at the core of living a meaningful, empowered life. It’s not an afterthought or a luxury—it’s the key to building healthy relationships, pursuing your passions, and navigating life’s challenges with resilience. Your mental health impacts everything, and that’s why we’re here: to help you strengthen that foundation and thrive in all areas of your life.
I specialize in working with people facing anxiety, depression, attachment wounds, and trauma as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. A common misconception about Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) is that we only work with couples or families, but MFTs can work with anyone—individuals, couples, families, or groups. What sets us apart is how we approach therapy. Our training and perspective focus on understanding individuals in the context of the systems they’re part of—family, cultural, political, societal, and beyond. This systems perspective allows us to see the bigger picture and better understand the dynamics impacting your mental health and well-being.
At Moxie, I also offer financial therapy, which helps clients address their relationship with money and the emotions and behaviors tied to it. Finances are a significant source of stress for many people, and my work focuses on helping clients understand their financial story, uncover hidden patterns, and create a plan for moving forward with confidence.
What sets Moxie apart is our holistic approach and the meaning behind the name. “Moxie” means force of character, determination, or nerve—something I’ve had to lean into during the most difficult seasons of my life. While I’ve certainly had moments where I wanted to curl up and give up, I’ve found that by grounding myself, turning to support, and holding onto even the smallest grain of determination, I could rise again as my authentic self.
I see that same resilience and courage in every client who walks through my door. Moxie doesn’t look the same for everyone, but witnessing my clients rediscover their moxie—whether it’s aligning with their values, living authentically, or blooming into the person they’ve always wanted to be—is the most humbling and rewarding part of my work.
Our services include individual therapy, couples therapy, family therapy, and financial therapy, and everything we do is rooted in helping clients heal and thrive. My approach is compassionate, but I’m also unafraid to keep clients accountable as they work toward change.
If you’re ready to take control of your mental, emotional, and financial health, Moxie is here to help. And as someone who’s a little spunkier than your average therapist, I promise to bring energy, humor, and heart into every session.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?

Collaboration is also a big part of my work. I’m always excited to connect with other professionals, whether you’re in healthcare, financial services, education, or another field. If you’re interested in collaborating or referring clients, send me an email, and we can set up a time to meet. I’d also love to hear ideas for community classes or workshops—I’m passionate about bringing accessible mental health and financial wellness resources to the community, and your input can help shape those offerings.
Another way to support Moxie Wellness is by spreading the word. If you know someone looking for a therapist or a referral source who might benefit from learning about my practice, sharing my information would mean so much to me. Building a referral network is one of the most impactful ways to help small practices like mine grow and reach those who need support.
Together, we can create a stronger, healthier, and more connected community, and I’d love for you to be part of that journey!
