Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Loux.
Hi Amy , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
After merging two separate floral design businesses in 2020, my business partner, Amyann Plemons and I (Amy Loux) determined that the Daylight Flora philosophy had to go beyond pretty flowers. I had spent over a decade in the floral industry, freelancing and then starting my own business. Though we loved pretty flowers, we knew that what moved us most was using the natural world (flowers) as a creative expression to give dignity to some of the most sacred times in people’s lives.
People have always been a key part to our “why”. And now as mothers, we bring our children to work, and give an outlet to other creative and talented women and mothers to work with us.
In the last 5 years, we’ve quadrupled our original studio square footage, worked on hundreds of weddings and developed incredible relationships within the Kansas City wedding industry.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
If you’ve had a business for more than 5 seconds you know that the road is paved with many ups and downs. We’ve had some hard lessons in scaling fast, and then having to take a few steps back to create a sustainable and healthy environment. We opened a retail flower shop for 2 years and between constant streetcar construction (we’re located on Main St. in Westport) and a slowing economy, we made the decision to close the retail side to put our sole focus on weddings and large events. Flowers are already a difficult business because we’re dealing with a luxury item that is perishable. We still have a lot of vision for what a cute flower retail space could be in KC, but at this point we had to “kill our darling” idea of a flower shop to see the greater vision of Daylight Flora thrive.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I think one of the things we’re most known for is our high value on the relationships we form with our clients, employees and vendor colleagues. It’s import to us to have a good sense of who our clients are so that we can create a design that really reflects their unique love story. Having strong relationships with our fellow wedding vendors, ensures that we work together as a unified team to pull of an incredible experience for our clients and their guests. Additionally, we’re committed to creating healthy, warm and inviting work spaces for our employees. We believe that healthy and safe relationships are the foundation to success in life, and honestly, as much as we want to be known for our excellent work and service, we want to be known for our kindness.
I would describe our design esthetic as artful whimsical and romantic. We’ve done endless styles: contemporary, traditional, etc., but we’re always going to bring that ‘Daylight Flora’ flare of artful, whimsical and romantic.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
We believe in challenging social norms around motherhood. There’s a lot of pressure in patriarchal societies to remove children from “professional spaces” and often that is by necessity. But in some situations, like ours, we believe that having our children around us is an asset. It strengthens our bond with them and it allows for our children to observe women, who are serious about their work, also prioritize motherhood. It’s not always easy, and we can’t bring them everywhere with us. But when it’s appropriate, you will find our children running around our studio, making a mess, and being in our midst. We are huge advocates for mothers having the freedom to make the choices that are right for them.. For many women, they are full time stay at home moms. For others, their kids are in daycare. And for people like us, we’ve been able to develop a sort of hybrid situation. Motherhood can be lonely and incredibly heavy, which is why we are committed to creating a safe space for women to come, use their gifts, and bring their children if they need to. Or not! Sometimes it’s nice to have a bit of a break too. Either way, woman have an incredible capacity to multi task.
