Meet Amy Kuntz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Kuntz.

Hi Amy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I began my photography business in 2008 shortly before I had my own children. It started out as just wanting a nice camera for taking pictures of my niece and nephews. I was working full-time at an office job at the time. Before long, I had friends asking me to take their pictures, then friends of friends. I upgraded cameras and lenses, learned by reading photography blogs, learned how to pose my subjects and how to achieve optimal lighting and my business just took off! Once I had my son, I stopped working full-time to stay home but kept my photography as a side job. I focused on family and children photography, shot quite a few weddings and then my little girl came along.

I’m not sure when my focus changed to newborn photography, but that was the genre that challenged me yet interested me the most.

Something about the posing, lighting and all of the little props that come along with them are just so special. I tried newborn photography in my client’s homes, I then set up a space in my own home for newborn sessions. The more newborns I photographed, the better I became with them and I quickly learned that I needed a space outside of my home where I can hang backdrops, store all of the equipment and make a more comfortable space for my clients.

I opened up my very first studio in 2019. Two years later, my husband and I purchased an adorable home near the historic Independence Square that is used exclusively for my photography studio.

I focus on baby’s unique little features with images that will keep them new forever. Images that help you feel the love that mama has for her brand new baby when she snuggles them close. I like to combine the perfectly posed images along with the more natural images for an all-inclusive experience for my clients.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In ways it has been smooth, but owning and running a successful (and profitable) business is always a struggle at some point. Photography is becoming extremely popular. Anyone who can afford it can buy and operate a professional dslr camera and lens and call themselves a professional photographer. But it takes time and effort to learn what goes into creating a beautiful portrait, especially with newborns.

I’ve poured a lot of myself, my time, time away from my family into creating a business that I can offer a professional experience and a professional product for my clients.

I’ve invested in an amazing studio space, top of the line lighting, camera, lenses, backdrops, studio props, etc.

So I would say some of my struggles have been knowing where to invest my time and money, how I can charge to stay competitive with other photographers yet still earn a living and all the while staying up to date with current photography styles and popularity.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in portrait photography including newborn, baby milestones, first year/cake smash, maternity, family and child photography. I also offer senior/graduate portraits and professional headshot photography. However, my main focus is on those tiny newborns.

I am most proud of my newborn photography and my ability to pose babies because it is such a challenging genre of photography. It takes hours and hours of practice to perfect newborn posing and I absolutely love working with new babies and families to create images for them to cherish forever.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The majority of my business comes from word of mouth! I also receive a large portion through social media and my website ranking high on Google. Clients sharing their images through social media, sharing my website, leaving me 5 star Google reviews are huge!
