Meet Amy Greif of Novel Group at Compass Realty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Greif.

Hi Amy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Kansas City born and raised, I’ve had many paths that have led me to being an entrepreneurial realtor. After college and grad school, I was a sports reporter for the Kansas City Star before pivoting to a long-term career in healthcare marketing. I was able to take a lengthy sabbatical to be a stay-at-home mom and community volunteer before I pursued real estate. For the past 15 years, I have helped such a cool variety of people buy and sell their homes… I have great stories. How lucky am I to gather new people in my life and take care of longtime friends as well. The Novel Group at Compass Realty is comprised of seven outstanding female realtors and we are thriving in the Kansas City real estate world. Plus we are close friends and love supporting each other over happy hour (not kidding). I am really a matchmaker – helping clients find their next perfect home and helping them find the next owner of their home to create new memories. I am so grateful.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have a charmed life – strong loving family of origin, a lovely blended family of children (including my son Macauley) and grandchildren and a vastly eclectic and supportive friend network. Having said that, everyone faces obstacles of one sort or another through life, including me. I have had losses, just as we all have. The loss of my parents, the sudden loss of a sibling and staying way too long in a bad marriage left me stuck. For a long time. I worked hard to move myself forward (lots of therapy!) and that has had a direct impact on my realtor skills. I have a much better understanding and peace about how to help my clients move forward in their lives. Moving is not easy and I am helpful in encouraging clients in making smart decisions about their living situations, sometimes helping them deal with grief of switching residences and realizing hope and excitement as they begin new chapters. I am a gatherer of people, a nurturer, mostly patient and a good listener. My journey of self-discovery has helped me enhance these skills and share them with clients. If you ever want to know how relevant putting up outdoor Christmas lights and getting a beautiful dog were to helping me get unstuck, just let me know!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am a licensed real estate agent in both Kansas and Missouri. I am part of the Novel Group at Compass Realty. We work all over the metro area, but tend to spend the most time in Mission Hills, Prairie Village, Leawood, Westwood and Fairway. This year we will sell over $70 million in Kansas City real estate. Our name reflects our mission – we are here for every chapter.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
DO NOT ABANDON YOURSELF! It took me 60 years to grasp that while it is admirable to always put others’ needs first, ultimately if you are not taking care of your own needs – emotionally, spiritually and physically – you may survive, but you will not thrive.

Take your life experiences, both positive and difficult, and embrace them to glean what you’ve learned from each one. Use those lessons in your life. Don’t put them on a shelf – use them to grow and thrive.
