Today we’d like to introduce you to Amaya Williams.
Hi Amaya, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started taking photos about three years ago as a favor for someone. I didn’t even know I was good at taking photos because it was just something I’ve never explored. As my client then started posting the images for her business, people would ask who was her photographer, my prices and availability. I hadn’t even owned a camera yet, I was using a borrowed camera just for this favor. All of my images were raw and unedited so image the shocked when people actually inquired about my work.
After great feedback, I started to explore photography much deeper. I would watch YouTube videos for hours, learning depth of field, lighting, aperture and etc. I bought my own camera and since then I have fallen deeper in love with photography.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey as a photographer has been smooth for me because I had no expectations. Like I said, this is something I never explored so imagine my surprise when I was actually great at it. After three years of taking photos, I am just now proclaiming to be a photographer. I am exploring the idea of becoming a full-time photographer and with any small business, there are going to be busy seasons and slow seasons… so finding balance in that can be tricky.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a photographer that travels back and forth from Kansas City to Los Angeles, I am just proud that I have clients who demand my work in both cities. That is a blessing in itself. I am able to be flexible and creative as I want to be. I now offer Make-up services for my clients and I am working on adding a full team to my brand – Photos by Amaya, to make the experience that much more incredible and convenient, giving my clients a full one-stop shop.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Most people who find my photography page are surprised when they see I am also a fiber artist. I have another small business, Just Macrame Me (@justmacrameme) which I am proud of. I love boho home decor and had a difficult time finding decor that I envisioned, so I started to hand-craft my own pieces. I thought, why not make a business out of it and so here I am, a photographer and fiber artist.
