Today we’d like to introduce you to Amaris.
Hi Amaris, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Brooklyn, New York is where I entered the world and into a family of performers. My dad was a working actor and both he and my mom were dancers for many years in the big apple; performing with the Ailey Company, Broadway, SNL. Crazy, right? With parents like this, I am pretty sure I was destined to fall in love with art & performing from infancy.
I was about 2 years old when we moved to Kansas City (why God why). Twenty-seven and some-odd years later, I am a woman of many passions. I have several avenues in which I cultivate expression. As a working actor, improviser, wannabe director, business owner, photographer, musician (this list goes on), I never stop creating. I never want to.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Did I have a smooth journey?? My past trauma experiences and people-pleasing tendencies are screaming. I spent so many years of my young life shrinking Amaris. Putting her in a box. Keeping her comfortable. All for that coveted acknowledgment from others that I am indeed a “rule follower” and that success is based on what society deems as such.
Except, like many… I am a dreamer. An artist. A complex out-of-bounds adventure seeker. And that box I kept myself in quickly became too small. I began to suffocate. I tried playing the role of a classic girl with mid-western values (yes I’m generalizing). Go to school… Conquer corporate… Get married… Settle down… I spent most of my twenties solely focused on accomplishing those “successes”. Completely numbing the artist part of me; screaming to be set free.
In a way, I’m glad that has been my experience up until now. Every day I am challenging myself. Suppressing, yet, slowly healing my paralytic coping tendencies. All of that mixed with a little bit of a ~pandemic~ has inspired me to redefine my values and passions. I have a completely new perspective on life, in which I finally feel awake.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
One of my favorite pastimes is to watch others dream. Not in a creepy watch-you-while-you-sleep way… But in an exciting and imaginative way.
In 2021, I founded Amaris Creative Studios. As a creative consultant, with the aspiration of helping others feel supported in their dreams, I wanted to establish something that was all mine. Something that allowed me an artistic outlet, connection with others, and the freedom to continue my never-ending indulgence in art and performing.
Whether I have a client who is just starting their business and has no clue how to work on Instagram or someone who seeks collaboration on an editorial, or a model who wants to build their portfolio. It’s so fulfilling to play a role in developing the dreams of such amazing and talented creatives.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Did I say I’m also writing a film???
To be continued…
