Meet Amanda Unzicker of The Interior Shoppe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Unzicker.

Hi Amanda, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Hi! I’m Amanda Unzicker, decorator and owner of The Interior Shoppe. At 8 years old, I knew I wanted to do interior design. After watching Trading Spaces on TLC, I was in love with all things design! I went to Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, for Interior Design. They got rid of the program while I was in school. Instead of going to another college, I decided to start working on my dream. I began working at Sherwin Williams in Columbia and wrote a business plan for a flooring and design store. Fast forward 10 years from writing that biz plan, I am a flooring and design shop in my hometown!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say it has been easy, I don’t think chasing your dreams is ever easy! One of the hardest parts of this journey was school ending. I had this plan set out: school = me being an interior designer, but learning that Interior Design was being dropped at my college threw an entire wrench in my plan. Grit sets others apart, and I wasn’t going to quit! After working for Sherwin Williams for four years, I finally became the “designer” helping with new builds, but then my husband got a job opportunity 100 miles away. We moved, and I had to start my dream all over. We lived in the new town for a year and decided to return to our hometown. Will, my husband, said we could move if I found a job. I took a leap of faith and applied at a flooring store, a dream of mine! I got the job! We moved back, and finally it was as though my dreams started playing out after so much hardship. We bought a historic building in our hometown of St. Joseph, Mo. After sharing much of our journey on social media, we had a production company reach out and do a “sizzle reel” on us, They sent it to a few TV Networks, and we got passed on after 8 months of going back and forth. Talk about another heartbreak! We are working on our Spanish Revival Flip home, and I am still working with clients living out my dream- Doing interior design and selling flooring in my Shoppe.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The Interior Shoppe is a full-service interior design studio, flooring, and tile shop. We noticed all of our interior design clients were overwhelmed with the options at the big box store and on Pinterest. We have one-on-one consultations in our showroom with a paired-down selection carrying only the most relevant styles and choices. We help guide you in the entire process, making all of these decisions so much easier and more fun! We created a unique experience for shopping for flooring.

We love working with our clients to help their home tell their stories. We want others to walk into the homeowners house and know who lives there. We are great at merging many different styles for our clients. Many of our clients have antique heirloom pieces that need to mesh with today’s times, and we love to be a part of that.

My husband and I also have a flip home that we regularly update via social media and Youtube. We are currently remodeling a historic Spanish Revival Home. It is on one of the most charming streets in St. Joseph. It was a duplex, and we are turning it into a single-family home. It is a 4 bedroom and 3 entire bath home and is completely gutted. The flip needs everything new, and we’d love you to follow along as we fix it. It’s not your usual “flip,” I can promise you that. So, when you think of fixing up your home and watching someone on social media do it, think of The Interior Shoppe. Follow us on social!
