Meet Allison Mott of AM CPA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Mott.

Hi Allison, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have my Bachelors and Masters in Accounting from Kansas State University. I worked at a Big 4 Accounting firm directly out of college. It never felt like that job fit me for it. After I left public accounting, I went into the Non-Profit world. I worked at two local non-profits and loved the culture at both. I was able to secure the position of Controller (leader of the Accounting dept.) at a Non-Profit in my late twenties. It was an amazing experience. I was able to oversee every part of the accounting process. The thing about Non-Profits is they are usually lean on staff so you wear a lot of hats and get to see the entire process. The experience I gained was invaluable. I left the non-profit world for the opportunity to purchase a small local accounting firm. When that opportunity did not work out, I decided I wanted my own firm regardless and would build my own from scratch. My only clients in the beginning shared my last name. I immediately got to work building a business and brand. I started Allison Mott CPA (now AM CPA) in September 2019. I added my first hire in October 2020 and are currently looking at adding a second. We are growth oriented and I can’t wait to see what comes next!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been smooth parts of the road, but the road is definitely uphill. We are building a modern Accounting Firm for client’s needs and that isn’t always an easy feat.

The biggest obstacle however is probably no shock. The firm was established in 2019 and my first tax season was hit by a pandemic. We work with small business owners year round and the small business world was devastated. The 2020 tax season was unprecedently extended and multiple tax laws were passed in a single year. The following tax season was also extended and tax law was passed in the middle of tax season that affected returns we had already filed. We adapted and problem solved and not only survived but thrived. If we can handle 2020 and 2021, then I have faith we can handle any obstacle headed our way!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about AM CPA?
AM CPA is an accounting firm that specializes in small business accounting/bookkeeping, tax, and consulting services. We were built in an age of technology and utilize to its fullest potential.

Our main goal is client experience and client satisfaction. We are all too familiar with the stereotypical view the world has about accountants and we pride ourselves on breaking that mold. We strive to provide an excellent client experience and accurate output/work products. We love to say that we bring JOY into accounting. Our clients are constantly leaving with smiles on their faces or have a good laugh while they are with us. We will do the heavy lifting for our clients so there is no need to them to be stressed during a meeting with us. We try to have that energy reflected in all our communications including social media.

One service line I am very excited about is our Educational offerings. We have started to release educational videos on our social media pages that cover hot topics (advance payments of child tax credit, Quarterly Estimated Payments, and Stimulus checks). We also just launched QuickBooks courses which are open to the public and current clients.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I have learned so many valuable lessons from COVID-19. One is be ready for the unexpected and be adaptable. As an Accountant, I would love to control as many things as possible to get a desired result, but that is not real life. You have to be flexible and willing to go with the flow when necessary. When Congress passes tax law in the middle of tax season, you just have to determine how you are going to handle the situation within your firm and keep it moving.
