Today we’d like to introduce you to Allen Williams

Hi Allen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
At a very young age I fell in love with hip-hop and knew that my life would revolve around it in some shape or form. After my father’s death in 2003, my family and I moved south of Kansas City, where I began to build what is known today as DHR Music Group. Faced with many challenges in life, I made many mistakes; one in which led me to receive an 155 month sentence in federal prison. I now try to set an example for the youth of my community by continuously showing them that you’re not defined by your past or mistakes, but by the lessons you learn from them. Over the last eighteen years, I’ve released ten studio albums and have had seven platinum certified singles. What I lack in Billboard charting hits, I feel that I more than compensate for with my unique approach to production and the refusal to follow trends. I make music that makes me happy. I’m not worried about what other people find enjoyable or what’s trending on platforms. Streams and views don’t define who I am as a person or an artist. I was recently released from federal prison after more than 10 years and I’m currently hard at work releasing new material and reestablishing myself as one of the most unique and versatile artist in my genre while also providing opportunities for youth to express themselves and create art that promotes love, peace, and joy with a world that still slows down to listen to a story. I believe we all have a story that should be told.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Growing up in a single parent household with no example of what being a man looks like is a struggle in itself. I always felt pressured to be the one to change the circumstances of my family. Unfortunately, being an independent company with no resources or financial support makes it hard to compete in a playing field where a million songs are released worldwide daily. On the plus side, I’ve had experience in many failures on my side that now helps negate making mistakes that so many companies and independent artist make today. In the beginning radio was impossible. Synch licensing was nonexistent and outside of physical sales, revenue was slim. Over the past decade the industry has changed dramatically and fortunately I was prepared for it. It was a struggle in 2011 making the decision to have a release that would only be available for digital stream or download. Now we see that that is the industry’s norm. I believe that you should always look to be innovative and different and never afraid to take risk. At DHR Music Group we’ve done just that and through ever uphill battle we have been greatful of the outcomes. Even our failures have been blessings.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At the age of 9, I begin playing drums. By 15, I began producing my own recordings. At 16, I founded DHR Music Group where I begin to release studio recordings. I’m most proud of my early success selling over a million records with my first album The Legacy. Over the past 19 years, I’ve been known to have a simplistic, generic, simplified sound, with a story that is also relatable and enjoyable to the ear. That’s what set me apart. Especially among artist in the Kansas City metro.

What does success mean to you?
I define success not by money or sales, but by the joy in my heart when doing what I love. I love music, and if I can provide for myself and family while doing it; then I’m a success.
