Today we’d like to introduce you to Alaina Ferguson.
Hi Alaina, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
When people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up my response was quite often a marine biologist. Loving the sea, and sea creatures seemed like the best fit for me. Then, as I saw the reality of what it would take, and understood I did NOT have a love for the science of any kind, I realized that was not for me. I always knew I wanted to have children, and being a mom was so important to me.
In preparation for that, I decided that being a teacher would be the perfect job. It would make it so that once my kids were in school, I would have the best of both worlds, having a career, and being there for my kids when they needed me. So, I went to college and got a bachelor’s in Early Childhood Education and a bachelor’s in Elementary Education. I taught both kindergarten and 3rd grade before moving out of my home state of Utah. When we moved my husband became the sole provider for our family. Giving me the opportunity to be a stay-at-home mom. Something I thought would be a dream come true.
I quickly realized staying home all day taking care of the home and my family was not something that fully fulfilled me. I loved being able to be with my kids but felt something was missing. So, I searched and found a few different ways to find that fulfillment. I started out doing Mystery Shops, then after moving to Kansas City in 2014, I tried out a few different MLM companies. All of these were perfect for me at the time. Each of them taught me how to own and run a business, plus allowed me to be home with my kids when they needed me, and give me the achievement of helping out financially. Once my younger children were in preschool, I had the opportunity to clean homes while they were at school.
In 2018, I decided to make my business official, so I created Missouri Mama Cleaning LLC. We have grown from just me cleaning; to having four to six cleaners who work as much, or as little as they want. I have been able to help provide a flexible job for other moms and like-minded individuals. I have joined networking groups, used mentors, and learned from others in the same industry. It has been the best journey! I love learning and improving as I continue to grow my business.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There have definitely been some challenges and obstacles to overcome. First, it took a lot of finding out the type of business I could be the most successful at. Then once I found that thing I was good at, there have been many stages of ups and downs. Learning about new cleaning processes, the best and quickest way to clean, etc.
Finding like-minded individuals who have the same, or better, eye for detail is not always easy. Learning how to train properly, and ensure the homes being cleaned are getting done the right way is a continuing process. I believe in always improving, so I feel it will be a continuous process of learning and improving.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Missouri Mama Cleaning?
We are a Kansas City-based cleaning company. It is our goal to help busy families keep their homes clean, so they have time to focus on more important things in life. We offer recurring cleanings on a regular schedule that fits with their needs. We also clean small offices and vacation rental properties. My cleaners quickly become a part of the company and represent Missouri Mama Cleaning as they are entering homes and offices.
I learn about each cleaner and what they are best at. I allow them to use their unique abilities and match them with clients they work best with. We understand that everyone is different, that everyone has things that matter most to them. Especially when we are entering into such a personal and sacred space, we want to make sure we make our clients are comfortable, and trust us with the most important things to them.
We believe in making sure our clients are satisfied with our services and have a 100% satisfaction guarantee. We also love getting to know our clients and my cleaners often begin to feel like family in our client’s homes.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Don’t get discouraged when things don’t go smoothly. There will be issues that arise, and the best way to deal with them is to admit fault, fix the issue, and learn. No company is going to be perfect from day one. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help. There are many people out there who are more than willing to share their knowledge and expertise.
I have personally been successful because of those I have surrounded myself with. I have been lucky enough to have a husband with a business background, who has helped me with finances, dealing with clients, and being a support. So, lean on those around you!
