Meet Abigail Grysban of Abigail Marie Copywriting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Grysban.

Hi Abigail, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Words have always fascinated me. As a child I wrote songs, short stories, and poems, and shared them with anyone who would listen. At 10 years old my dream was to become a children’s author and also a concert pianist (my creative side was really showing!). But after graduating high school, the question became less about what made me happy and more about what made a decent living. Many people told me that writing doesn’t pay, so I tried my hand at a few other things: bookkeeping, tax preparation, account management, nonprofit work, youth mentorship. Across every role, one theme stood out: writing was my sweet spot – whether it was an instruction manual, a newsletter, or a series of job descriptions.

Fast forward to 2021, when I ran across a Facebook ad for a comprehensive copywriting course. I thought, “Wait, there’s a type of writing I can turn into a career?” (If you’re like I was and aren’t familiar with copywriting, it’s a type of writing for sales and advertising – think social media ads, print ads, website pages, sales brochures, etc.) Out of curiosity (and a smidge of desperation), I signed up for their email list and eventually invested in the course, completing it over the span of about 9 months.

It took a while to build my portfolio and attract clients, but today I have the privilege of helping companies – both locally and in other parts of the country – connect with their communities and grow their businesses through human-centered marketing.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This road has held ups and downs just like anything in life. As an entrepreneur, I’ve had to teach myself a lot of things from scratch, such as putting together my portfolio site or developing my client onboarding process. Marketing is an ever-changing field, and it requires an innate drive to learn and adapt, because what worked last year may not work as well this year, and you have to be ready to run with new information. This path has also been a huge self-awareness journey as I learn what works well for me (and not so well) as a self-employed person calling all the shots!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am a one-woman copywriting business serving small to medium sized companies: I create social media posts and ads, brochures and flyers, digital ads, website messaging, and other marketing materials. This service matters because many solopreneurs and small businesses are great at what they do, but aren’t sure how to talk about their products or services in a way that attracts their ideal clients/customers. Through writing, I help these companies connect with the people who need what they offer!

My career background serves me well even with this career switch. Learning the analytical fields of bookkeeping and tax preparation now helps me dig deep into the details needed to write effective sales copy. And my time in non-profit spheres and youth mentorship helps me write directly to people’s core desires: to be seen and heard, to belong, and to connect with others. My goal is to help people connect with each other and with products and services that can improve their lives.

Some clients hire me for a one-time project such as writing their website, while others want on-going services for their social media pages or online advertising. I love customizing what I offer to exactly what each client needs – no more, no less.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I’m at my happiest when I’m being creative and connecting with other people. I think human beings are fascinating, so I value personal expression through creativity and helping those around me feel comfortable to be authentically themselves as well. Writing (both for work and in my spare time), social dancing, volunteering, and making meals for friends and family are a few ways I tap into creative joy and share it with others.
