Life & Work with Toonz EMK of Kansas city

Today we’d like to introduce you to Toonz EMK.

Hi Toonz , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m from Shreveport, La I moved to Kansas City Mo when I was 9 yrs old. I started rapping when I was 11 years old. No equipment . I use to just beat on the table all the time. I worked on my skills by freestyling a lot. ( That’s rapping off the top of the head) over time I got better. I bought some equipment, And I eventually started my own label at the age of 17 EZ Money Records (which is now EMK Records with a few friends. After forming my label I’ve been grinding it out going through ups and downstairs in the industry. Choosing to stay independent and not sign with a major label. I’ve spend countless days selling mixtapes hand to hand. I would sell my mixtapes everywhere at anytime. Gas Stations, the mall etc…. lol I’ll never forget selling a cd inside of a store in the mall ( hand to hand) gotta love my fans lol thanks to the change in technology all of my music now digital so there is no more CDs. I put in a lot of ground work. As well as doin countless hours of online promotion. Which has grown my fan base from being local to worldwide. I also became a brand ambassador in 2021 modeling for brands such as Habits 365, and Blackhole Clothing.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Early on I had to learn how to record myself. I didn’t have the right equipment at first so my songs would have poor quality and people wouldn’t really listen to my songs. I had to buy equipment and learn to mix and master my own music. I also had to learn how to run a record label. I had to learn the music business. I found out just being able to rap wasn’t enough. I had to study my craft and the business. I also got in a high speed chase in 2011 that set me back for a while I quit rapping. Also me not getting a major record deal caused me to have to fund everything myself. So that slowed me down. It’s been a rough road I’ve lost friends on this journey to the streets as well as family members

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a musician/ model I specialize in rapping. And making beats. And also sporting fly clothes. I’m known for my music. I’m known for rapping all the time off the head. I’m most proud of the fact that I’m real I’m authentic and I made it into the rap game and I made my dreams come true as well as the others around me. I’m living a dream. My work ethic and my attention to detail is what set me apart from others and my personality. I can out rap most people. Rap is my sport. I’m proud of being able to be a leader in this industry it’s trying a blessing.
