Life & Work with Tohm Bakelas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tohm Bakelas.

Hi Tohm, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started Between Shadows Press as a means to release my friend’s poetry chapbooks. I went to Staples and bought some paper and ink, and went to town on making the books.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been a fairly smooth road. The only setbacks are dealing with the author’s egos.

My guidelines for publication are pretty straightforward. It’s when those authors, the ones with those egos, ignore those guidelines, that’s when the problems arise.

And I don’t like problems.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Between Shadows Press specializes in publishing chapbooks of poetry and short stories. I’m most proud of the community we’ve built around this idea.

We weren’t the first ones to do this, nor will we be the last. It’s just cool to be able to bridge the gap between writers, who’re still alive, that I’ve looked up to from the mimeograph revolution to the modern-day underground. Writers. Nothing sets Between Shadows Press apart from any other press.

We know what we like.

What are your plans for the future?
More chapbooks. More community. More everything.

  • $5 for every chapbook
