Today we’d like to introduce you to Talena J. “Da Goddess” Acon.
Talena, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I first started singing and performing at the tender age of six. I grew up recording in my uncle’s studio and participating in talent shows, poetry readings, etc. around town that my mom would enter me in. Coming from a musically inclined family I naturally loved the entertainment. My grandpa owned his own record label and record shops.
I was always doing something with music and the arts. It wasn’t until I got older that I realized that the industry was 90% business and 10% talent! This is what led me into understanding how to service that.
Like so many creatives, I always had an entrepreneurial spirit and as a child poet turned rapper, I could visualize almost anything being possible right? So I was optimistic, and amazing at my craft, but I learned to become even greater at business and development and all the admin in between!
Growing up in the inner city region of St. Louis, Mo, and later moving to Kansas City, I noticed there was definitely a lack of resources and education for not only independent artists but aspiring business owners alike. I started looking at Hip-hop and the urban culture as a whole, I started analyzing the need for financial literacy, the lack of marketing knowledge, and just the need to understand not just the music business, but business in general.
So I started Maycorp Enterprise. A Business Consulting and Financial Marketing Firm to offer an array of innovative solutions and services!
I was able to scale that business in KC on the music scene as well. I have since serviced hundreds of clients from B2B to B2C with either structuring and opening a new business, legal registrations, streamlining their current operations, or building business credit and/or strategic marketing.
While, Indie Is The New Major, became the subsidiary that specifically caters to Artists, Songwriters, And Musicians in business, Maycorp is kind of an umbrella for all services offered.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course not, especially Being a single mom with just a vision and drive and trying to do gigs or travel for the music alone is tough at times, Likewise, it’s not always easy trying to create the changes you want to see around you.
In most cases, you have to work twice as hard just to create any investment capital outside of your everyday bills! It’s no walk in the park for sure, You will lose sleep and make tons of sacrifices when you want to be successful though, so it kind of comes with the grind. You just take those strategic pauses and keep pushing!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Well, In a male-dominated industry, being a female rapper is already a task, there’s always doubt and undermining but clearly, women are winning right now lol.
I’m more than just an Artist and I love that hip-hop is so universal now. We can drop a “hot 16” and still highlight the importance of things like business, credit, and life insurance, and leverage now to reach those urban communities and audiences that don’t have this knowledge.
I use to say as an emcee My pen was my most prized possession, but I’m proud to say that now it’s knowledge and ambition.
As cliché as it sounds, knowledge really is power! and the sooner we learn and implement those changes we want to see in our lives, we live better. We lower crime and we educate our children better. A lot of times we are merely products of our environments. You can’t heal in the same ones that make you sick though! So something has to change.
I think that’s what sets me apart, I’m a visionary first and a go-getter. Having my own music label, magazine, clothing lines, and even cosmetics is super exciting and definitely makes me proud but Entertainment is one thing, and understanding Business is another, so I’m just as passionate about being a great influence and creating opportunities for others.
My goal is to use my music, brands, and companies to entertain and inspire, but my investments to actually change lives. Now That’s how you align your passion with your purpose!
My business firm and music admin company specializes in Business registrations, credit, and finance and assisting other Creatives with their copyrights, royalties, and music rights!
My motto is “Bosses Build Bosses.”
I love what I do across the board! Music is life so it’s easy to relate to all the various genres and sing along to different tunes, but what happens when the music stops? This is why it’s much bigger than rap for me.
