Life & Work with She Groove (Trio) Leah-Vocals, G-Guitar, and Elisa-Bass of Kansas City

Today we’d like to introduce you to She Groove (Trio) Leah-Vocals, G-Guitar, Elisa-Bass.

Hi She Groove (Trio), so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
She Groove came together through a shared love of music, family, and the kind of performances that genuinely connect people. What started organically between family members and lifelong musicians; Which evolved into an all-female trio rooted in soul, groove, resilience, and joy.

Each of us came into music differently;
G, our guitarist, was born into a musical family in New Orleans and spent decades immersed in jazz, funk, smooth jazz, songwriting, and live performance.
Elisa, our bassist, has always had a deep appreciation for music and performance.
Leah, our vocalist, brings a lifetime of church and soulful vocal influence into the group.
Together, those different musical backgrounds blend into a sound that feels both nostalgic and fresh.

Like many artists, our paths weren’t perfectly linear. Life brought career changes, family responsibilities, setbacks, and periods where music had to pause or evolve. But music always remained part of who we were individually, and eventually it brought us together at exactly the right time.

Before officially launching She Groove in 2024, both Elisa and Leah faced cancer diagnoses, surgeries, treatments, and recovery journeys. Walking through those experiences together as a family made finally stepping onto the stage as a band feel even more meaningful. Our debut performance became less about “starting a band” and more about celebrating resilience, healing, creativity, and being fully alive in the moment.

Today, She Groove performs throughout Kansas City and surrounding regions at wineries, lounges, festivals, private events, and community spaces. We’re known for creating an atmosphere where people feel connected — whether that means relaxing with a cocktail, singing along, dancing with strangers, or simply enjoying live music that feels genuine and soulful.

At the heart of it all, She Groove is really about bringing people together through music.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like many creatives, each of us has experienced seasons where life responsibilities, careers, health challenges, finances, self-doubt, or simply survival had to take priority over music. Building a career in live entertainment isn’t always glamorous or sustainable in the beginning. Most artists spend years playing unpaid or low-paying gigs for exposure, tips, and the opportunity to prove themselves to new venues and audiences.

When you work in nightlife entertainment, there are sacrifices people don’t always see behind the scenes — missed evenings with family, late nights, long drives, and trying to balance passion with real life responsibilities. Building a band while managing work, family, healing, and personal growth definitely takes commitment.

There were long stretches where some of us stepped away from performing professionally altogether, unsure if we would ever truly return to it.

Just before officially launching She Groove, both Elisa and Leah were battling cancer and navigating everything that comes with treatment and recovery while we were simultaneously trying to build something meaningful together. That experience changed all of our perspectives. It reminded us how important joy, creativity, connection, and truly showing up for life really are. Music stopped feeling like something optional — it became something healing and necessary.

One of the biggest ongoing challenges has honestly been breaking into booking circles as an independent band. There are some incredible talent buyers and venue owners who genuinely support emerging artists and create opportunities for new talent, and we’re deeply grateful for the people who have welcomed us. But we’ve also experienced how difficult it can be to get noticed in an industry that often relies on familiar rotations, established connections, and repeat bookings. Many applications and outreach emails simply go unanswered, and sometimes opportunities come down to who you know before anyone ever hears what you do.

As women musicians — especially female instrumentalists — we’ve also had moments where we felt underestimated or overlooked in certain spaces. Instead of allowing that to discourage us, we used it as motivation to become stronger musicians, stronger performers, and stronger collaborators. Every challenge has made us more appreciative of where we are now and even more excited about where we’re headed.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
She Groove is a powerhouse trio that blends feel-good rhythm, soul, and personality into performances designed to create an experience, not just background music. Let’s just say… we funk it up.

Our sound pulls inspiration from jazz, soul, R&B, funk, yacht rock, blues, pop, and modern favorites. We create setlists that feel familiar, nostalgic, uplifting, and engaging while still leaving room for improvisation, musicianship, and spontaneity.

With a repertoire of more than 150 songs and growing, we tailor each performance to fit the atmosphere, energy, and audience of any event or venue. We love surprising audiences with fresh additions while making sure there’s something that resonates with everyone in the room.

One thing that truly sets us apart is the energy and connection we create during our performances. We genuinely love performing together, and audiences seem to feel that immediately. More than simply playing music, we aim to create an environment where people connect — not only with the songs, but with each other.

There’s something special about watching complete strangers sing the same lyrics together, dance beside one another, smile across the room, or bond over a song everyone knows by heart. For a few hours, people let go of stress, distractions, differences, and routines and simply share the same moment together.

Whether we’re performing in an intimate lounge, restaurant, corporate gala, private event, or on a festival stage, our goal is always the same: to create an experience that feels joyful, human, and shared. In a world where so much connection happens through screens, there’s something powerful about watching people reconnect in real life through live music, finding common ground and shared joy in a time that often feels increasingly divided.

We’re also proud that She Groove represents different generations, backgrounds, and musical journeys coming together as one group. There’s a lot of life experience behind this band, and we believe that translates emotionally through the music.

More than anything, we’re proud that people leave our performances feeling lighter, happier, nostalgic, energized, and connected. Creating moments where strangers sing, dance, and genuinely enjoy being present together feels incredibly meaningful to us.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
The importance of authenticity. Audiences connect with honesty and energy far more than perfection.
People remember how you made them feel.

Don’t wait until you feel “ready” to start creating, performing, or putting yourself out there.
Most artists spend far too much time doubting themselves, comparing themselves to others, or thinking they need to be perfect before they begin. Growth really happens through doing.
Ironically, some of the moments audiences connect with most are the imperfect ones. If you miss a chord, come in off-key, laugh at yourself, and find your way back into the song, people often cheer even louder. Those moments remind everyone that live music is human, real, and shared together in the moment.

We’ve also learned that success in music isn’t always linear. There may be seasons where life pulls your attention elsewhere, opportunities slow down, or you question yourself creatively. That doesn’t mean your passion is gone or your journey is over. Sometimes life experience actually deepens your artistry.

Most importantly: it is never too late to chase your dreams, discover your purpose, or return to something you love. Creativity doesn’t expire with age, and passion doesn’t disappear just because life takes you in different directions for a while. Some of the most meaningful moments in our musical journeys happened later in life, after experiences that ultimately made us better artists, performers, and people.

From a practical standpoint, we’d also encourage artists to keep learning beyond just the creative side. Understanding branding, networking, professionalism, social media, live performance etiquette, and relationship-building matters just as much as talent — and balancing all of that as working musicians can feel nearly impossible sometimes.

One of the best decisions we made was building a strong support system around the band, including working with an incredible band manager who helps us handle the business, marketing, branding, promotion, scheduling, and growth strategy side of things so we can stay focused on creating and performing.

We’d also highly recommend that artists create an EPK (Electronic Press Kit) early on, or hiring a professional to do so. Having official photos, clean videos, bios, performance information, and contact details organized in one place makes a huge difference when reaching out to venues, festivals, media outlets, and potential collaborators.
It has helped us grow our visibility, streamline communication, strengthen our branding, and expand our reach to new audiences and regions. (Check the credits in this article for her info, you won’t be sorry)

Keep showing up. Keep practicing. Keep creating. Keep saying yes to opportunities. You never really know which small moment, connection, or performance could completely change your path.
