Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Uhler.
Hi Sarah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 2014 I decided on a whim to leave my job and go to cosmetology school. I fell in love and never looked back! My path has led me to beauty bars, commission, booth rent, and I currently work for myself.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not! I took a leap of faith and left my full time job to go to school. Although financially it was a struggle for awhile, I was still happier with the change. While I was in school I learned I had brain tumors and needed surgery. At 26 years old that was an intense experience. The surgery caused me to have a blind spot in my vision field and I had to take a small break from school. I relearned how to move through the world missing a third of my vision and returned back to school in less than 2 months. From there my body continued to work against me which makes such a physical job difficult so I have worked a lot on my health while still having passion for my work.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have a wide range of skills and specialties. Currently I do a lot of alternative hair, shags, mullets, color, and work on a wedding team doing hairstyling and makeup. I work a lot with natural texture and creating a low maintenance style though I do still love to do a big beautiful blowout. I serve a largely LGBTQIA+ clientele and am so deeply fulfilled by providing affirming services. I try my best to be affordable and accessible because everyone deserves to have great hair.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Having patience and grace. Everyone is coming from a different place so meeting a client where they are, communicating clearly, and letting go of a lot of strict rigid rules taught in school. Being able to go with the flow and accept challenges helps reduce stress and burnout.
