Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Heaton.
Hi Sara, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was first introduced to photography through a good friend that had a professional camera in my late teen years. We would go out taking fun pictures with her as the photographer and me as the model and I fell in love with the art of taking photos. And not just taking the images but also the post-production of making those photographs pop. I finally got brave enough to buy my own professional camera and knew that I wanted people to be my main subject. I would hang around the local skatepark with my brother and capture candids, posed, and action shots. I loved sharing those photos on social media and eventually caught the eye of my first ever clients. Realizing I could start a business doing what I love was pure bliss. Finally in 2017 I quite my full-time job as a manager at a clothing store to go full-time with photography and my business really took off!
Initially I was going to school to pursue a teaching degree and switched my major to photography. I graduated from UCM as the first in my family to earn a college degree.
I’ve faced a lot of loss and adversity through my life; my sister, father, brother, and daughter all passing away within a 20 year span. I hold the photos of my family members very close and have always appreciated the heartfelt gratitude of my clients when giving them beautiful photos to treasure forever as well. Photography has been a creative outlet to poor my grief into and so helpful to have worked with such amazing people over the years.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Fairly smooth overall. Struggles along the way would include learning how to balance work with life. I’ve learned over time that you don’t have to say ‘yes’ to every inquiry that comes your way and you can take time off.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I photograph a little bit of everything from weddings, families, seniors, to headshots, marketing material, and events. I am best known for my wedding photography. Particularly my natural style of editing and creative lighting. I’m most proud of creating a successful business that I enjoy so much and the freedom it gives my life.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
