Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Pho.
Sam, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I took a semester of photography back in high school. To date, we used Pentax film cameras. At the completion of the course, I realized I wasn’t very good, lol.
However, the photography bug did bite and over the years, I looked at cameras and saw the transition into digital. It was still very expensive and there was no way I could justify sinking that kind of money into something I was not very good at doing.
However, a few years later a friend introduced me to Sony and their A6000 cameras. I bought one with a Best Buy discount and started my photo journey in 2016.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Accessibility has been my biggest obstacle from the very beginning back in 2016. I think every photographer is aware of how expensive it can be. However, I am so glad that today it can be quite easy to get what you need to start taking photos with an interchangeable lens camera.
My biggest personal struggle nowadays is actually just talking to people and setting up photoshoots. Being an introvert photographer who mainly shoots portraits makes it a bit difficult for me. I definitely hide it as best I can during the shoot and push through.
I’m so glad I do because after the shoot is done and the photos are edited I just get a feeling of great accomplishment because I’m doing what I love to do.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
After photographing various events to get the practice I went to my first Anime convention in town. I love watching Anime so after going to the convention I saw cosplayers.
I never knew such a thing existed. It was such a light bulb moment for me and I knew from then on that was what I wanted to do. I mainly do cosplay portraiture and that is definitely what I am known for.
I love bright, vibrant colors which mix well with most cosplay when it comes to my editing style.
What matters most to you? Why?
I think enjoying the work I do is most important. That’s why I got into photography after trying film for the first time. It allowed me to be creative. I certainly can’t draw, paint, or craft, lol.
If you don’t enjoy the work you do I think it definitely can show in your output. Even when it comes to digital work.
