Today we’d like to introduce you to Princess Leah Becker-ricketts
Hi Princess Leah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was not made to live a “normal life.” My name really is Princess Leah. No, my parents are not Star Wars fans, but YES, the Force is with me!
I grew up in a family of doctors, healers, and musicians. My mother, Nia Becker, CRN owns a Home Health Agency, Inity. My grandfather, Dr. Leslie Becker, MD., was one of Kansas City’s first African American urologist to have his own practice in KCK and train other doctor’s at KU Med. His aunt, Catherine, was actually a psychic and performer, much like myself, and she even went by the name, Princess Reba. She read tarot, palms and a crystal ball while performing at a night club for soldiers coming home from war. She identified as negro but passed as Italian. My parents met in a reggae band, so I grew up watching them at the Reggae Fest. My dad is from Kingston, Jamaica and still plays around town with his band, Deepa Reality.
We were a holistic and naturopathic household. My mom was always treating us with natural remedies. I don’t remember ever having Tylenol in the medicine pantry; she’d ask how much water we drank, food we ate, or rest we had. Turmeric, silver, and Goldenseal were staples in the house.
I actually never thought I’d be making tea. I’ve always dreamt of dancing and singing to the mass collective or writing memoirs. I was born into a West African dance group, as my mom was in a tribe called “Earth Healers” when she was pregnant with me. I used to perform at Kwanzaa on 18th and Vine until I was about 11yrs old.
It wasn’t until my son, Indigo was born that I found myself in the kitchen all the time stirring up some new concoction that could relieve me of my post-partum anxiety or fatigue. My mom had all of us at home, and I was fortunate enough to be able to give birth at a natural birthing center, New Birth Co in Overland Park, KS. My midwives gave me suggestions for tea to support healthy pregnancy, such as alfalfa and red raspberry leaf. I found myself asking and researching on more herbs that were good for mamas and babies, and I started creating tea capsules to give to nursing moms. Not long after, I was brewing tea for hormone support for my sisters and friends.
It wasn’t until I moved to Colorado Springs, CO in 2018 that I was inspired to go all in and create a business out of it. The name FemRems stands for Feminine Remedies. I want to empower women to awaken to their divine glow (pre and post partum), and I hope to inspire people to align with their fullest potential.
Today, FemRems has evolved into a more spiritual alternative healing service that uses tea and tarot to support our mind, body and spiritual development. It’s another way to tap into the Divine Feminine strength (that we all carry within) and balance its energy in Conscious Love.
I still pursue my dream to dance, sing and write, and I also read tarot daily on my YouTube channel @princessleah888. I’ll be partnering with the first black-owned brewery, Vine Street Brewing Co to read tarot and perform for the collective. I hosted an Irie Vibez Open Mic night last year, and we’re planning to bring that back, so be on the lookout!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think there are always obstacles when you’re following your soul’s purpose mainly because there are opposing energies that want to interfere with your bliss work. I did (and still do) have challenges to overcome; things like anxiety and limiting beliefs.
My mom was a single parent who worked nights at the hospital and days in home health care so that she could send us to the best accredited private school that matched most of her ethical values (The Barstow School, classes of ’07, ’10, ’13). Though I am eternally grateful for the opportunity I had with Barstow, I still struggled with feeling like an outsider and sometimes even a fraud. I lost touch with myself trying to fit in but eventually was guided back to authenticity.
In 2019, I broke my engagement off and moved back to Kansas City from Colorado. Luckily, we had a good relationship and a strong friendship, but it was equally as devastating to split lives with someone you thought you’d spend forever with.
I lived with my mom with nothing to my name. I couldn’t even afford the mail forwarding card (less than 25 cents). The car I drove was on lease under my ex’s name, so it went back to the dealer, and we were co-parenting across town with one car. I felt crazy. Like I made the biggest mistake of my life to leave such a secure thing. I went through a deep dark night of the soul (ego death), and I learned a lot about my worth, settling, and my inner strength, as well as the power of God’s Divine love.
When covid hit in 2020, I suffered such deep depression that I had to put my FemRems aside and focus on getting back on my feet for the sake of my son. I worked for T-Mobile and saved up enough to get my own car, and by the end of the year I was in my own apartment. I even won a trip on the company because of my work performance! I knew that my relationship with money and anxiety had to transform if I wanted to empower women to step into their true divinity.
It’s also not always easy when you’re in a field that isn’t often credited with positivity. Being in spiritual development is enlightening, but it can also be frightening if you don’t know anything about it. People tend to punish what they fear, and they only fear because they don’t understand.
“When it comes down to it, we’re all still fragile. We all want love. When it comes down to it, were all still human.” -Melita Irie Muzik
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I consider myself a creative healing artist because I’ve been intuitive channeling through the expressions of dance, singing, and writing since I was a young girl. I was never meant to live a “normal” life. I believe that my purpose is to heal the heart of a woman and the soul of mankind through conscious love.
The best way to describe what I do is inspire people to awaken to their fullest potential. I am drawn to Feminine Empowerment, and that’s not only within the female collective. We all carry the balance of feminine and masculine energy, and our purpose as spiritual beings who are having a human experience is to embody the fullest potential of each aspect.
I’m called to so many different expressions of this work, but my main outlets are through tea & tarot (FemRems), music healing (Melita Irie Muzik), and creative writing (Gifted Remedies). I offer 1-on-1 coaching, personal readings, and collective performances for business retreats and public venues. I also include my handcrafted fruit-infused tea with every Soul Session!
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I think everyone has a potential for greatness. We just need to be reminded every once in a while. That’s why I love tarot and oracles. It’s a way to connect with the higher power to receive additional messages that maybe we already know and just need confirmation, or it can help guide us in the direction of our soul’s calling.
Music also has that same healing effect, and we hardly even realize how powerful it can be to our psyche. It’s important to be mindful of what we’re putting in our minds and on our bodies because that can make a huge difference to the quality of our lives and for all of humanity.
