Life & Work with Olivia Sommer of Kansas City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Sommer.

Hi Olivia , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My photography journey started in college when I took my very first media class while working towards my degree in agricultural communications. The second I picked up the camera I fell in love with it. I started out taking photos of livestock around our farm, capturing school events, and talking family and friends into letting me take their photos for free. Over the last four years my subjects have changed quite a bit at I found myself venturing into portrait and wedding photography more and more. These days I find myself focusing on weddings, couples, and maternity photos. The opportunity to capture special moments like these in my clients lives is something I will truly never take for granted.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not always been a smooth road, but it’s all about the journey right? While I did take a few classes in college, I am primarily self taught when it comes to photography. That means lots of trial and error, frustration, self doubt, and plenty of mistakes along the way. However I truly do believe that I would not be where I am today without that experience. It taught me to work hard, be more creative, and get back up even after I feel like I’ve failed.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in photographing weddings, couples, and maternity.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory is taking photos with my mom. She always had a camera in her hand and made sure we always had a way to take photos too. It made even the simplest of days fun.
