Life & Work with Olivia Long

Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Long.

Hi Olivia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My parents were photographers so I grew up around photography and was a little model for them and eventually learned how to use the camera and take photos of my model horses.

I bought my first DSLR camera at 20 and used it to take photos of my favorite subject- horses. I was a barn manager at the time so I spent a lot of time at the barn from sun up from sundown and learned to look for the light and the emotion that makes my photos what they are today.

Now when I moved to Kansas and Covid hit, I was out of a job and finally got the guts to go full time and make photography not only my passion but my day and night and 24/7 job. I love it. I’ve never been happier

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The struggles were denying the creativity for so long. I had a lot of jobs that I was good at but didn’t make me happy the way creating with my camera does. Getting a concussion in 2018 from my barn manager job woke me up that it was time for a change, and I transitioned to the best non-photography job I’ve ever had as a vet assistant, and the healthy work/life balance helped me start my change of mindset to pursue creativity from there

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m really proud of my equine work because horses are still my passion despite my ups and downs with them in my life. I know them. I know their brains and their beauty and I’m proud of how I can tell their story and power in images.

What I believe sets me apart is how personable I am, and how creative I am. All photographers have different creative eyes, and I think I have a unique one if I’m going to toot my own horn. I like to see things from a different perspective. Not the obvious ones, but the ones no one considers.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Don’t stop seeking knowledge, and never settle on your current skill set. But give yourself every now and then.
