Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick.
Hi Nick, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m originally from Wichita, KS. In 1992, I moved to Lawrence, KS and formed the classic college folk-rock band Huckleberry. Writing songs, recording albums, and touring Kansas, Texas, the Midwest, and the Southeast eventually led me to my next chapter in the late-90s power-pop band The Regulars. We caught radio airplay and drew interest from Los Angeles-based record labels, and I kept writing and performing my handcrafted melodic gems for happy audiences.
In 2003, I formed the roots rock band Red Guitar and released two albums of earthy, heartfelt music that really connected with fans and venues in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, and throughout the Midwestern US.
I’m now performing as a solo artist and in an acoustic duo with my wife, Julie Nave. Together, Julie and I seamlessly blend acoustic versions of classic songs from throughout the history of rock and country with my original tunes—all wrapped in that laidback coastal blend that’s perfect for the lake, the beach, or those beautiful nights around a firepit with good friends and family. Whether it’s back-porch pickin’ at places like Big Cedar Lodge on Table Rock Lake, house parties, country clubs, breweries, or outdoor patios in Kansas City, Lawrence, Wichita, Branson, and beyond, we’re all about creating those Sunsets & Good Times moments. 🤙🌅🎶
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Anything but smooth! Some of the struggles have been continuing to earn money as a performing musician; working with lots of different band members over the years; and adapting to the changing marketplace and tastes through more than 30 years of hard work!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I play “laidback coastal rock and country” mostly as a solo acoustic artist, including my original songs. I think the best thing I do is evolve with and read the crowd, including interacting with the crowd spontaneously at all sorts of events.
I can also flex into different styles of music as needed for the event, from country to classic rock to alternative rock to yacht rock. I play and sing all of my songs with just myself and my guitar and I also feel proud of my original songs and how people have been responding to those originals!
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Perserverance! That is the ONLY thing that elevates someone in the performing arts as a career. It is a challenging way to earn income and there is no road map. Just driving forward and exploring and adapting seems to be what has worked for me along the way.
