Today we’d like to introduce you to Nia Marie.
Hi Nia Marie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, my parents started me in the arts as soon as they could. I started playing violin and dancing at the age of 6, followed by piano at the age of 8, and stuck with all three throughout high school. But what came from all three was not only my love for music but my love for creating it. I was lucky enough to have teachers that encouraged that creative spark in me which quickly turned into composing and songwriting – the one thing I never grew tired of. But truthfully, I was never sure where any of it would take me. I was always juggling my anxieties, fears, and passion (which I can only say has gotten a little easier over the years) but with the encouragement of the support system around me, I was able to take my journey to Berklee College of Music where I graduated from in 2015. Since then, I’ve been writing, collaborating, and performing as much as possible. But I’ve also been learning who I am and want to be as an artist. Can’t say I’m totally there yet, but finding my voice has definitely been the best part of the journey so far.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While I’ve had a great support system around me throughout my musical career, I’ve struggled with serious anxiety and what some know as “imposter syndrome” for much of the latter part of my career. The anxieties I had before college became heightened during college. So, the past few years have been me chiseling away at those walls and learning to live with and, in a way, befriend my anxieties. They’ve held me back from doing so much in my musical career but I’ve gotten better at doing things afraid as opposed to not doing them at all.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a pop/R&B singer-songwriter. I write all of my own material and work with an amazing group of producers here in NYC. Right now, I’d say I’m most proud of the new music I’ve been releasing and the EP I’ll be releasing in the coming months. These songs are all so different but they all stem from real-life events and emotions. They’re also all, in a way, a little victory for me so I’m really proud and happy to share them with the world.
I’d say what sets me apart from others is the unique style of my music. While some of my tracks are definitely pop-influenced, there are others (especially ones that I have written recently) that are more in the R&B and singer-songwriter realm. Growing up, those were the two genres I listened to most and I think that carries over into the songs I write now.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Not sure I would call it luck, but perseverance and stepping out on faith have definitely played a huge role in my life. However, I will say I am lucky to have the friends and family I do because, without them, I’m not sure where I’d be or what I would be doing. But I am so lucky to be able to create music with some of my favorite people and I’m even more lucky to call them my friends.
