Today we’d like to introduce you to Ms. Royce Martin.
Hi Ms. Royce, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am an author, motivational speaker, umpire, and former caregiver of my mother, who suffered from Alzheimer’s, a human resources professional whose life embodies resilience and transformation. A survivor of childhood abuse, I have turned personal pain into purposeful advocacy—empowering others to overcome adversity and reclaim their lives. After serving 11.4 years in the abyss of hell, I emerged with a renewed sense of purpose and a passion for personal and professional growth. I am the owner of Living Life on and with P.U.R.P.O.S.E. A testament of perseverance. Through my autobiography, From Whence I Came, Better Not Bitter! I open my heart and soul in hopes that others can begin their healing process and make a conscious effort to lay their luggage at the foot of the cross… AND LEAVE IT THERE!
Armed with a master’s degree and over 13 years of experience in human resources, I inspire change, promote healing, and demonstrate the power of second chances. Through writing and speaking engagements, I share messages of hope, accountability, and the incredible potential within every individual to rebuild and rise stronger.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all—it hasn’t been a smooth road. It’s been hard, humbling, and at times painfully lonely.
The struggles began early with surviving childhood abuse, which left deep emotional wounds and shaped how I viewed myself and the world. Later, incarceration brought its own set of challenges: the loss of freedom, stigma, broken relationships, and the uphill battle of rebuilding trust—both with others and within myself. Reentering society after 11.4 years meant starting over in many ways, often facing closed doors, judgment, and the constant pressure to prove that growth and change were real.
Caring for my mother as she battled Alzheimer’s was another profound struggle. Watching someone you love slowly fade while still needing you to be strong, present, and functional is emotionally exhausting and deeply heartbreaking. At the same time, balancing education, healing, and a professional career in human resources required discipline, resilience, and an unshakable commitment to personal growth.
There were moments of doubt, setbacks, and fear—times when giving up felt easier than pushing forward. But each struggle became a teacher. Those experiences shaped my purpose, strengthened my empathy, and fueled my passion to advocate for healing, second chances, and transformation. The road wasn’t smooth, but it was meaningful—and it’s the reason I can stand today and say that growth is possible, no matter where you start.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work centers on transformation—helping people and organizations turn adversity into purpose. I’m an author, motivational speaker, and human resources professional, and I’m the founder of Living Life on and with P.U.R.P.O.S.E. I specialize in resilience, second-chance leadership, trauma-informed growth, and workforce development, particularly for justice-impacted individuals and those navigating major life transitions.
I’m known for blending lived experience with professional expertise. I don’t speak from theory—I speak from a life shaped by childhood abuse, incarceration, caregiving for a parent with Alzheimer’s, and rebuilding a career and purpose from the ground up. That authenticity allows me to address difficult topics with honesty while offering practical, actionable pathways forward.
What sets me apart is credibility earned through experience and accountability. I bring empathy without enabling, hope without denial, and motivation grounded in responsibility. I’m most proud of breaking cycles—personally and professionally—and showing others that a past does not disqualify you from leadership, impact, or a meaningful future. My message is simple but powerful: growth is possible, second chances matter, and purpose can be built from even the most painful chapters of life.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I acquired my nickname, Royce, from the church ladies! Two reasons: #1) my real name is Ra’Yce (hard to pronounce), and #2) they thought it would be cute to rhyme with my sister, Joyce. The meaning of my name stands for master of leadership!
I’m genuinely funny, curious, and still carry a child-like excitement about life—even the smallest things light me up. That joy is real, and I protect it. I am an avid exerciser and an ambassador of #GYAUADS (owned by Starr Luvly Bodies, Tonille Williams). After everything I’ve lived through, choosing wonder, laughter, and hope is intentional.
I’m a champion for others, especially for people who’ve had to fight quietly just to keep going. I have three siblings, all of us carrying our own struggles, all of us doing the best we can with what we were given. That shared experience taught me compassion without comparison and the power of showing up for one another.
I am also a Kansas City People’s Choice Semi-Finalist and Finalist for best author. Being acknowledged for my story by my peers and the community is mind-blowingly amazing. Moreover, to stand amongst the greatest local talent is super humbling. I pray that the extension of my gratitude flows in my desire to support as many as I am able!
Without God, I am nothing. I love hard. My favorite word is DELIGHTFUL! And I’m especially passionate about seeing women rise into their voices, their confidence, and their purpose. I want women to know they don’t have to shrink, apologize, or wait for permission to take up space. If I can be someone who cheers them on, stands beside them, or reminds them of their strength, then I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.
