Life & Work with Melissa McGee of Lees Summit, MO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa McGee.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my photography journey in 2010 as a newborn photographer, capturing over 600 newborn babies each year in hospitals across Kansas City and Lawrence, KS. Over time, I gradually began learning about pet photography and started volunteering at local pet shelters, photographing cats and dogs to provide professional images that increased their chances of adoption.
After the birth of my daughter, I transitioned out of hospital newborn photography and into other genres. My creative work continues to evolve, and over the years, I have specialized in photographing pets, families, kids, sports, dance, branding, and headshots. One of my biggest passion projects is The Santa Experience, a total immersion-style experience with Santa for both kids and pets. It was the first of its kind in Kansas City and continues to sell out every year, with 99% of clients returning annually. Each year is a bit different, which keeps it exciting both photographically and logistically! You can check out recent photos at: https://thesantaexperiencekc.com/
Currently, I am most well-known for my work in pet photography, headshots, dance photography, and The Santa Experience. My clients often tell me that they love the photos and art products they receive, but that another reason they keep coming back year after year is the experience they have at their session. When they look at the photos on the walls of their home or office, they don’t just see beautiful images—they remember the fun they had during their session, and that brings all the smiles!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Finding an affordable studio space has been my #1 struggle in recent years. As my business has grown, finding a realistically affordable space to create and accommodate my clients has been a significant challenge.
From a creative perspective, I thrive on learning new things, so I am always seeking out ways to properly photograph in both classic styles and emerging trends. It’s a continuous reminder that in order to grow as an artist, I need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. That’s what pushes me forward and keeps my work fresh and exciting!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in high-quality, heartfelt photography that celebrates people and pets at every stage of life. My work falls into a few core areas—high-volume dance, cheer, and sports portraits for studios, clubs and schools, as well as boutique sessions for pets, families, and professionals needing standout headshots.
I’m probably best known for combining efficiency and warmth—especially in my volume work, where I’ve developed a seamless, stress-free system for studios and organizations. Picture day doesn’t have to be chaotic or impersonal, and I take pride in making it smooth, fun, and memorable for everyone involved.
On the boutique side, I’m deeply proud of the relationships I build with clients. Whether I’m photographing a beloved pet, capturing a family’s story, or creating empowering headshots, my goal is always the same: to create images that feel authentic, meaningful, and beautiful enough to be displayed for years.
What sets me apart is the experience I offer. I’ve photographed thousands of people and pets over the years, and I approach each session with both authenticity and genuine care. I believe the session experience is just as important as the final images—because when people feel seen, comfortable, and celebrated, the photos naturally reflect that.

What’s next?
There may be something in the works that I can’t talk about just yet—but stay tuned! I have some goals for this year that should allow me to offer some fun new session types. I am always looking forward to sharpening my skills and learning exciting new techniques that allow me to create images and experiences that deeply enrich my clients’ lives. My goal is not only to deliver stunning photographs but also to ensure every session is a meaningful and unforgettable experience.
