Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Henry.
Hi Melanie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In 2016, my daughter wanted a new backpack for school. She had something particular in mind, but we couldn’t find anything that matched her style. I suggested we make one instead of continuing our search. I gave her several backpack patterns, and we selected the perfect fabric for her new bag. I sewed the backpack, and it turned out pretty good! I shared our project online and was shocked at the positive response from family and friends. I enjoy designing and creating, so I jumped in and learned so much. I learned to sew at a young age, primarily by making garments. Over the years, I would make drapes and other projects for the home. After the successful backpack creation, I looked into other small businesses in the handmade industry.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overall it has been a smooth road. I feel I’ve taken the right steps at the right time to build my business slowly. I think the biggest obstacle or challenge is the creator. Putting yourself and your work in front of family and friends can be hard and intimidating. Initially, I knew that if a stranger bought one of my bags, I was doing something right. I have gained more confidence as I design, create, sell more and talk to more customers at various events.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I create high-quality handmade handbags with a focus on durability. I start with an image of the finished handbag and work backward to determine the pieces necessary for construction. I select durable upholstery and vinyl fabrics for the exterior of my bags to last through the normal wear and tear. I want my bags to be functional, unique, and durable, which can sometimes test the limits of my machines. I also re-purpose formal and wedding gowns into classic clutches for statement and heirloom pieces. I enjoy the creative challenge of adding new details to my designs. Designing and creating allowed me to meet people and share my talents with them. I’m most proud of how I’m building this business while working another full-time job. There are days when I am exhausted, but in the end, I’m doing something I love. I use a variety of ways to share my handbags with customers. I have my products in several local retail shops and a website and participate in juried art shows. It took some time to discover my niche market with events. After some trial and error, I discovered art shows. These events have high-quality items and customers who appreciate the effort put into the creations. I also discovered the organization Best of Missouri Hands. This group has helped me gain confidence, meet artists like me, and learn more about running a small business. I am currently a juried artist and Best of Missouri Hands board member. Obtaining the juried artist status helped me open my eyes to my creations being truly special.
Do you have any advice for those just starting?
When starting a new business, you must ask for help. There is no reason anyone should do this on their own. Small business resources are available, and others are doing the same thing. Reach out and ask for help. There is a wonderful community available ready, and willing to help.
