Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Taylor.
Hi Mary, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began my career in animation working for WDAF-TV Fox 4 in Kansas City creating on-air graphics and animations. From there I have worked in a variety of industries in the post-production field, including work for AMC Theatres, professional sports stadiums across the country like the Chiefs & Royal stadiums, and advertising, financial, health, publishing and tech companies.
I have been fortunate to work on projects ranging from loopable animated gifs to animated explainer videos for the web; from broadcast tv graphics packages to animations for movie theatres; from live event visuals for conferences of 10,000+ to animations for professional sports stadiums broadcasting to audiences of 35,000+. It’s fun to see these projects come to life and it’s a thrill to see the audience enjoying them.
I have created a few original short animations as well that have screened at prominent film festivals across the United States including Animation Block Party, the Cucalorus Film Festival, the Kansas City FilmFest and World Animation Celebration. One was even featured on the home page of Yahoo!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely not been a smooth road for me. I was lucky to start my career with a great senior graphic designer to show me the ropes. But a long-time career in the post-production field can be a bit bumpy. At the start of my career it seemed with buyouts or financial downturns I was laid off every couple of years. I found some teams were a better fit than others. I found myself on my own, running my own business and hustling wearing a lot of hats that I never thought I’d wear. It can be hard work, but fun work as well. At the end of the day, I get to do what I dreamed of doing as a kid, making something come to life on the screen.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I draw. Sometimes I’ll bring those drawings to life. Professionally, that means I create illustrations and animations.
My studio name is based on what all of film is made up of … a series of pictures, which when quickly flipped through creates the illusion of movement. My logo, like me, is always striving forward. When she is animated it is one of the most used elements in animation, the walk cycle.
I love weaving a story together. I love it when the right story beats come together to elicit a laugh or gets ya right in the feels. I love it when a story and a character comes to life.
What matters most to you?
Community. I live in Waldo here in Kansas City where I can walk to some great places like the library, the local pastry shop, the local brewery, passing friendly faces along the way, and enjoy time with family and friends. It’s a crazy world right now, and when I reflect on the great community I get to live in, I feel grateful.
