Life & Work with Mackenzie Husman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mackenzie Husman.

Hi Mackenzie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
4 years ago, I moved across the country to be with my husband at his duty station. We moved to North Carolina and I knew I was going to want to start a family and I was worried about finding a career that would allow me to be with my children at home. I picked up my camera and fell in love with photography. I’ve been able to provide for my family, still stay home with my two kids, meet some amazing people, and witness some pretty cool things! I couldn’t ask for a better job or better clients.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When covid hit I pretty much had to close business for a while, I was doing mainly birth photography at the time and there was only one visitor allowed in the labor and delivery rooms so unfortunately, I was not able to photograph or be a doula to any of my clients. I took some time off, rebranded my business, and found a love for photographing couples!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have been a photographer for 4 years; I am still finding out where I belong in this big world of photography. Before covid hit I specialized in birth photography, my heart will always be there but it is time to move on to something more scheduled for the sake of my family. I’m very proud of how far I have came in 4 years. I think what sets me apart is I genuinely enjoy my job and getting to know my clients. I love watching your family grow and it’s bittersweet watching kids grow up through my lens.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I’ve had some wonderful mentors in this business. The best way to find them is to get involved, find styled shoots, go-to lunches, and second shoot.
