Life & Work with Levi Young

Today we’d like to introduce you to Levi Young.

Hi Levi, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in the KC area and played soccer in college at Park University. I then attended medical school and my plastic surgery residency at The University of Kansas Medical Center. Upon completion of my residency, I took a position with a partner and started a plastic surgery department at St. Luke’s Hospital on the Plaza.

After three years there, I purchased my current practice from a retiring surgeon in 2015. The business has grown quickly and I soon realized I needed to expand. I built my own office building at 135th and Roe through 2020 and moved into the new location in January 2021. I continue to expand the business and services with the addition of a nurse injector and laser services as well as aesthetician services. I’m looking forward to continued growth over the years.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The years of training and school are very difficult. It’s ten long years of education. The early years of practicing and working after residency have their fair share of stress. My first position at the hospital was a challenge. The hospital setting and administration demands of working in a hospital setting took up a lot of time.

It was a big leap to leave the hospital and take the risk of starting a private practice alone. The challenge of running a business for the first time and taking on the financial risks was stressful but also very rewarding. It became much easier to invest the administrative time when it was for my own practice. After five years in solo practice, I approached my next big decision – how do I grow the practice, and how do I expand my services without overwhelming myself with work hours. That’s when I decided to build my own office building. I planned over a two years period and made the biggest leap of my career to build my new space.

The building construction started in February of 2020 – and then I was immediately shut down by COVID for two months. I’d say that was the most stressful part of my journey to date. The good news is we successfully moved into the new space in December 2020 and started seeing patients on January 1st, 2021.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve always been an artist. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed drawing, charcoal, and recently trying out some acrylic painting. The hobby has always been an enjoyable outlet for me. It’s also been a large part of my decision to pursue cosmetic surgery. The artistic principles I’ve developed always helped make cosmetic surgery a logical path for me. I use my artistic eye and creative visualization to see and create outcomes for patients.

As I evaluate each patient I build an image in my mind and visualize a final result that I develop my surgical plan around and that allows me to explain to each patient what to expect. I display my artwork in my office and exam rooms and I’ve always got a piece of artwork I’m working on or planning at home.

I specialize in cosmetic surgery. My practice is 100 % cosmetic so I tend to specialize in breast augmentation, breast lifts, and body surgery. I also do a number of facelifts, eyelids, and noses. I think I’m known best for being an artist and surgeon. I’m most proud of my ability to build my practice to where it is in only five years having started basically from scratch and to be so well established and thriving now.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I’ve had some incredible help along the way. several professional mentors that inspired me and helped encourage me to start my practice. Dr. Dan Bortnick helped train me and has been a trusted mentor at each step of my growth. He gave me a lot of professional insights and has been supportive in encouraging me to take the risks and grow my practice.

I have some of the best staff as well, my office manager Marlee and my nurse Jamie, as well as my front office staff Sara have been vital to our latest transition to the new office space. Their professionalism and hard work allow me to do my job well and put energy into growth pursuits. I could not have grown and accomplished these last few years without their expertise and excellence. Our aesthetic nurse injector, Delanie, has been an incredible addition to our team. I am continuously impressed by her abiilty to creat a personable experience for her patients in addition to beautiful result in her techniques with dermal fillers and Botox.
