Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Fotovich.
Hi Laura, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My passion for music began in the second grade when my parents enrolled me in piano lessons. Soon after, I started learning ukulele and guitar and began performing in musicals and singing in my church choir.
After graduating high school, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in music. I graduated from the City College of New York with a BA in music and a minor in journalism and loved my time in the city. During my time in New York, I was able to perform in venues and busk in the subway while completing my degree.
I’m currently doing shows and gigging all over the Kansas City area and have loved being able to perform on a regular basis. My setlist includes various indie-pop songs, as well as a few originals, played on the piano, guitar, and ukulele.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The music industry is not for the faint of heart and there have definitely been some struggles along the way. Performing in front of large crowds can be very nerve-wracking and I’ve had to work on building up my confidence over the years, which is not an easy task.
I still get nervous sometimes, but I’m able to control it a little more. It’s also very easy to succumb to self-doubt when writing songs, but I’ve been trying not to let it get to me and follow where the music takes me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I play a variety of music during my shows. My favorite style is indie-pop, but I also play some rock, folk, and pop music. My proudest moment during my musical career would probably be when I sang the National Anthem for a Kansas City Royals game.
It was very stressful, but it was so amazing to be able to sing in front of 28,000 people. It was so surreal and exciting to see myself on the jumbotron and I still think about it to this day.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
The biggest risk I’ve taken would probably be when I moved to New York City to continue my musical education.
I didn’t know anyone upon moving there since I was born and raised in Kansas; I simply knew I wanted to move there to learn from distinguished professors and experience the music scene in a big city like New York.
I was able to make so many connections and friendships and truly learned a lot during my time spent there. Taking risks is part of living and this is one risk I’m so glad I took.
