Today we’d like to introduce you to Kurston Ghumm.
Hi Kurston, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I attended school in Overland Park at LaBaron Academy of Design in 2009. Shortly after graduating, I became pregnant and we moved back to my hometown of Hays. There I tried various “real jobs” in search of stability for my kids. I decided in 2017 that my place in this world is behind a nail desk. I started searching in Hays for a salon home with little luck because I do not do hair also. The little towns just do things differently. This is also when I decided I wanted to advance my career and better my craft and the only way I can do that is being back in Kansas City so I can be around people better than me and can teach me. And being a single mom of 4 by now, what else do I have to lose, my sanity?! Kansas City has always welcomed me to the city! It has given me opportunities to get better and make a better living for my kids and I.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing is smooth always, right? Well, I have four kids which always keep me on my toes. I became a single mother of four kids after my daughter was born in 2017, awesome. I was just getting back into the nail scene at that time so I was waiting tables two days a week and doing naiks two days a week until I got busy enough to phase out of waiting tables. That part was easy because my work spoke for itself. In Hays, I had the hurdle of being in a hair salon and getting people to trust my skill.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am known for my acrylic work. I do more acrylic sets than other enhancements. My specialty is shaping and nail art. I am most proud of my speed. What sets me apart from the nail techs in my area is my speed first and my willingness to try anything when it comes to nail art. I love a challenge.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love all of the word of mouth support my clients give me. They are the reason I am so busy! I’d like to collaborate with other stylists in bigger projects! I try to stay current on my social medias for networking and for potential advancement opportunities.
