Life & Work with Krysten Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krysten Brown.

Hi Krysten, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Ever since I was young, I have always had a passion for taking pictures. I would take my disposable camera and walk around and take pictures from of my family pet to any view of our backyard. But it wasn’t until I took this basic photography class my senior year of high school and worked with the darkroom process that the passion really took hold. A few years later, I splurged on my first “professional” point and shoot camera and started to work on my craft, focusing mostly on nature photography while getting out of my comfort zone, trying out portrait photography. Fast forward a few more years, I got my first DSLR camera and really tried to turn my passion and hobby into something more. My favorite thing to take pictures of is still Mother Nature herself but I love capturing the beauty in the moment which means anything or anyone. Being able to work with clients that come from all walks of life and capture their true authentic self in the moment and show them how beautiful they are, is just the best feeling. As a plus-size queen that just up until a few years ago, didn’t truly love myself, I want to make sure my clients know that it doesn’t matter what they look like, where they are from, or who they love that they are stunningly beautiful.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have had some challenges for sure, mostly with confidence within myself to put myself out there as a photographer in fear of failure and I still struggle with that today. Being able to let go of my safety net and making that jump to make it the main source of income for me. But it’s nice to know that I do have support and love from a small group of family and friends that encourage me every day.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As it’s not my main source of income just yet so I will, for now, call it my side hustle, I am a photographer specializing in portrait and nature photography with desire to expand into boudoir photography. As previously stated, I enjoy capturing the beauty in the moment and that is where I think I may be more unique compared to other photographers out there. I feel the best pictures are the ones that aren’t planned and posed. What I am most proud of is probably working alongside L.Y.L.A.H for a photo event I planned that took place over the course of two days. It was amazing to see people from all walks of life come together for me to take their photos and tell their story.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I actually had to get some input from my mom to describe how I was growing up, haha. Growing up, I was actually pretty shy but I had a big heart and cared for others even though I was made fun of. I also had issues when I was younger and was diagnosed with depression with I was 12 or 13 years old and I still battle it to this day. I was very much into movies, t.v., music, dancing and bugging my younger sister, to which I still am into today. One thing I didn’t do too well in was school as it was always hard for me to sit in the classroom and retain everything they were teaching. I am more of a “hands on and do it” kind of learner.
