Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Lauber
Hi Kathy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved baking from the time I was a kid, through high school and college. Always just quick Pillsbury or Duncan Hines mixes but the process of creating something sweet and beautiful that you could share with friends brought me so much joy. 5 or 6 years ago I got really into cookie decorating videos on Instagram, and just became completely obsessed with teaching myself how to do it. I bought all of the gear and practiced all the time. I eventually started my own cookie instagram and website and orders took off! I was having a lot of fun but also as the demand grew I was finding myself dedicating almost every weekend to hours of work. After a few years, I decided to take a step back. I needed a break to find the joy in my creative outlet again. I’m still at a much slower pace than I was at my peak but I’m really enjoying my little sugar hobby once again!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was hard to balance my creative freedom with client requests. It was easy to get burned out or uninspired by the 7th “rustic bridal shower” request. I used to say yes to everything, but now I’ll only agree to do cookies or a cake for a theme that is exciting or new to me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m most known for my decorated sugar cookies. Every thing is made from scratch in my little kitchen in the Blue Hills neighborhood. There are tons of talented cookiers in KC who do amazing work but I really like the sweet and simple approach I bring to my cookies.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
