Life & Work with Kate Martin of West Bottoms (KCMO)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Martin.

Hi Kate, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I first was taught embroidery a little over 10 years ago. After working for a screen printing shop for 7 years doing the embroidery side of things, I decided I could do this on my own, and well here we are. Ease Embroidery will celebrate its 4 year in business this year.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been an easy ride whatsoever. Being a small business owner as well as single mom has as many perks as it does downsides. From figuring out social media for the business to finding childcare on the weekends so I can work, the bumps have been many!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I own and operate an embroidery business ranging from large wholesale type orders to smaller projects and one off pieces people request. Right now I’m working on adding embroidered detail to a pair of wedding suits. I love coming up with new ways to use embroidery as an art form. Yes it’s functional, but it can also be so beautiful. Besides being one of the only shops to accept smaller orders, I also pride myself on treating each job as if I was making it for a family member or even myself, haha. I want it to be perfect.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Taking risks is a given when you run a business. I mean starting a business in and of itself is a risk. I took some risks in the beginning that didn’t quite pan out, so now I’m a bit more cautious and critical when making bigger decisions
