Today we’d like to introduce you to Kala Roberts
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started blogging in 2012 back when blogs were more like daily diaries and people paid $15 to post their logos in other bloggers’ sidebars. As the blogging landscape changed over the years, I learned how to run my website like a business with ad networks, sponsored posts and SEO. My blog has ebbed and flowed with the seasons of my life, earning more money when I was home with my two kids and could devote more time to it, and providing the marketing experience I needed to return to full-time work as my kids got older. Although I still work full-time as a marketing manager for a local nonprofit, I currently run two blogs that bring in a little side income and let me share my hobbies. My Breezy Room provides simple home decor inspiration, and Rooted Wings Co is a nature blog about raising butterflies and native gardening. The best part of this journey has been the people I’ve met through the communities I’ve built online. I’ve received so much support from online friends and had several online friends turn into real-life friends.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The online world is constantly changing, so it has been a constant learning curve. I’ve reimagined and reorganized my sites many times, created a few digital products that flopped, and tried different ways of running a business, like running an online boutique and tried my hand at drop-shipping crazy plant lady tees (those actually did well, but then COVID happened and shipping and inventory became a problem). The beauty of blogging is that I can pivot as many times as I need to, and I love learning new things! I have a lot of experience from everything I’ve learned that can be applied to any business or career I want to pursue.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m best known for sharing relatable content that doesn’t fit your typical “influencer” mold. I don’t have it all together, and I have some pretty quirky interests, which you’ll see represented on my blogs and social channels. On Instagram, you can expect to see my makeup-free face, lived-in-home, neglected houseplants, random history lessons, and way too many stories about butterflies and moths. On my blog, you can find what my minimalist apartment actually looked like when it wasn’t perfectly staged for photos and encouragement to decorate your home in a way YOU love, like a gallery wall of queens from the 1500s. My business is a true reflection of who I am, and that comes through in every aspect of it.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Putting yourself and your ideas out there for the world to see always feels risky. I’ve taken various risks throughout my journey, but the risk that paid off the most was the willingness to show up authentically, even if it was uncomfortable. Finding something you’re passionate about is always worth investing your time, energy, and self into.
